Firelight Extended Social Hours and May Have Driven Human Storytelling and Language

Control of fire gave early humans something no other ape has: extra time. Specifically, up to four hours more per day for social interaction after dark. A new hypothesis from the University of St Andrews argues that those extra evening hours, gathered around a fire, may have been the key catalyst that pushed human communication past ape-like systems and toward true language.

The paper was published in Proceedings of the Royal Society and involves researchers from St Andrews and Dartmouth College. It offers one of the first detailed descriptions of what researchers are calling the fireside niche and how it could have shaped human behavior over time.

Lead author Catherine Hobaiter, a professor in the School of Psychology and Neuroscience at St Andrews, laid out the puzzle the research tries to solve. Decades of work with other species have shown that animals can learn from each other, organize foraging, pass on cultural knowledge, coordinate hunting, and navigate social hierarchies, all without language. So why did humans develop it?

"Decades of research with other species has shown us that you don't need language to learn from each other, to organize where and when to forage, to learn cultural knowledge about tools and songs, to coordinate hunting, or navigate social politics. It starts to look like human language didn't evolve for anything very useful!" Hobaiter said.

She pressed the point further. "While other species share all these skills, there is a fundamental puzzle: We struggle to find evidence of key differences between human and ape communication, and yet we are surrounded by evidence of human distinctiveness. For all their incredible, rich communication and cultures, no other ape is inventing algebra, writing King Lear or heading out into interstellar space."

The paper argues that firelight's specific properties made it uniquely suited for social bonding. Previous research focused mostly on fire's brightness and how it extended the day. This new work shifts attention to the color of firelight. Fire emits almost no blue light, which means it extends the day without disrupting sleep the way artificial or daylight-spectrum light does.

Firelight also flickers. The paper notes that neurons in the brain synchronize their firing to flickering light, suggesting that the flickering of firelight may help synchronize brain activity among people sitting together around a fire. That synchronization, researchers argue, could have supported the kind of extended, imaginative communication that storytelling requires.

Earlier research acknowledged that fireside storytelling mattered to human societies but assumed that stories emerged from a proto-language that already existed. This new work flips that sequence, arguing that the fireside niche itself may have been where the first steps toward language began.

Charles Darwin described fire as man's greatest discovery, excepting language. This research suggests those two things may not be so easy to separate.
