ADHD affects nearly 8% of children worldwide and is typically defined by difficulties with focus, impulse control, and sustained attention. A new study argues that some of the same brain patterns that make ADHD challenging may also support creative thinking.
The research comes from Dr. Radwa Khalil, a neuroscientist at Constructor University, and was published in the journal iScience, according to a report by Science Daily. The study was co-authored by researchers from several French research institutions. It draws on findings from multiple fields to examine the neurological overlap between attention and creativity.
The paper is titled Attention Unleashed: creative therapy for thoughtful transformation. It argues that brain systems involved in attention also overlap with those involved in creativity. Free-associative thought is one example the researchers point to. The ability to let ideas move in unexpected directions can contribute to creative insights, but similar patterns are also associated with distractibility and mind-wandering, two behaviors frequently seen in ADHD.
Khalil used a spotlight metaphor to describe how ADHD brains process information differently.
"Think of attention like a spotlight. Most people are able to focus their beam on one thing. ADHD brains have a wider spotlight, taking in more information at once," she said.
The study also challenges how ADHD is typically framed. Khalil noted that the condition is most often discussed in terms of what is missing or needs to be corrected.
"There's a tendency to view attention-related conditions like ADHD purely through the lens of deficit: what is wrong, what is missing, or what needs to be fixed?" she said.
She argued that this framing does not account for the full picture.
"Neurodivergent attention patterns, then, are not merely problems. They can open pathways to powerful creative thinking when directed appropriately," Khalil said.
The researchers point out that traits associated with ADHD appear among many highly successful artists and innovators, including Justin Timberlake and Simone Biles. The study stops short of drawing firm conclusions but raises the possibility that creative activities such as art, music, and dance could eventually serve as non-pharmacological interventions for children with ADHD. The researchers describe these as potential ways to channel defocused attention while also strengthening the brain systems involved in focus and self-control.
The study adds to a growing body of research that seeks to move beyond a purely deficit-based understanding of ADHD and examine what cognitive differences might also make possible.
