Brett Sullivan delivered a walk-off single Wednesday to give the Colorado Rockies a 6-5 extra-inning win over the Baltimore Orioles, Colorado's first walk-off victory since June 22.
The Rockies rallied multiple times while down to their last strike to secure the win and take the series, according to Yahoo Sports.
Colorado starter Tomoyuki Sugano bounced back from three difficult outings to deliver his eighth quality start of the season. He allowed three runs on six hits over six innings, striking out four and walking one, throwing 90 pitches with 61 for strikes.
The Orioles jumped on Sugano early. In the third inning, Blaze Alexander led off with a single, Jackson Holliday followed with a single, and Pete Alonso drove in a run with an RBI single to put Baltimore up 1-0. Later in the inning, newly acquired Luis Robert Jr. hit a sharp line drive to right field to score two runs and make it 3-0. Sugano then settled in, throwing three more scoreless innings.
Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer credited the veteran starter's ability to make adjustments. "I thought Tomo was awesome," Schaeffer said. "I thought his stuff played up today, velo was really good, the stuff was sharp. When they adjusted to him, he adjusted right back."
Sugano's secondary pitches were working. His curveball generated a 27% whiff rate, his splitter a 22% whiff rate, and his fastball a 25% whiff rate with a 62% strike rate. He also threw a first-pitch strike 73% of the time.
Baltimore's Trevor Rogers was equally sharp. Through 6.2 innings, he allowed just two runs on six hits while recording a career-high 11 strikeouts without issuing a single walk. Of his 94 pitches, 71 were strikes. He relied heavily on his fastball at 54% usage, generating a 29% whiff rate, and finished with 15 swing-and-misses total.
The Rockies' first run came in the third inning when Adael Amador singled and scored on a two-out triple by Jake McCarthy. A second run nearly followed on the same play when the throw to third got away and McCarthy broke for home, but an overturned replay call ended the inning.
In the fourth, Hunter Goodman doubled and scored on a two-out infield single by Cole Carrigg, snapping an 0-for-17 stretch for Carrigg.
The Rockies kept fighting back and eventually pushed the game to extra innings before Sullivan ended it with his walk-off hit.
