Deep in the Utah desert, outside the small city of Milford, a company called Fervo Energy is weeks away from sending power to the grid from what could become the first commercially operating enhanced geothermal system in the United States. The Cape Station project sits hours from any major city, down miles of gravel road, and it may represent a turning point in how the country powers its data centers and broader electric grid.
According to CNBC, Fervo's project is on track to begin sending power to the grid next month. The company has secured a new offtake agreement with Google and completed an initial public offering in May. Now it must show that enhanced geothermal can deliver cost-competitive electricity at scale.
Geothermal power is not new, but traditional geothermal energy required specific geological conditions, which sharply limited where it could be used. Fervo's approach borrows drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques from the oil and gas industry to unlock heat from the Earth's crust in places where conventional geothermal would not work.
Fervo CEO Tim Latimer began his career as a drilling engineer in South Texas before founding the company in 2017 with Chief Technology Officer Jack Norbeck. In the company's early years, investors were skeptical. As Latimer described early pitches to venture capital firms, a common response was, "Why would we invest in a power generation company? The electric grid's not growing."
Oil and gas companies were equally dismissive. The assumption in the industry was that drilling hotter wells through harder granite simply would not work. Less than a decade later, the picture looks different.
"It's a total transformation from 10 years ago, when people were questioning even the need for more new electricity," Latimer told CNBC. "This is a once-in-a-generation boom moment where hyperscalers, utilities and other customers need [power] now, and it's our power that will be an important part of the electric grid."
U.S. power demand is growing meaningfully for the first time in decades, driven in large part by data centers that require reliable, round-the-clock electricity. Fervo positions enhanced geothermal as a baseload power source, meaning it can run continuously rather than depending on sunlight or wind.
Recognizing early on that land access would be critical, Latimer began acquiring geothermal rights across the Western United States in Fervo's early days. The company assembled a portfolio of nearly 600,000 acres at an average price of $4 per acre. That same land now sells for more than $400 per acre.
Cape Station sits adjacent to the Department of Energy's Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy, known as Forge, which is also located in Beaver County, Utah. The DOE project was designed to generate data to help private companies commercialize enhanced geothermal technology. Fervo's flagship project now sits next door, on the verge of commercial operation.
On a tour of the Cape Station site, Latimer pointed out equipment familiar to anyone who has visited an oil field, including drill rigs provided by Helmerich and Payne. The difference is what those rigs are drilling into and what comes back out.
If Cape Station delivers as planned next month, it would mark the first time an enhanced geothermal project has moved from demonstration to commercial power delivery in the United States, a milestone the company, its investors, and the Department of Energy have been working toward for years.
