Netflix has officially announced that it will produce a third movie in the 'The Inbetweeners' franchise. The film will star Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, and Joe Thomas as the main characters from the original series. These actors are reprising their roles as Will McKenzie, Jay Cartwright, Neil Sutherland, and Simon Cooper.
The creators of the show, Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, will return to write and direct the new film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Production began on Monday in the UK, according to Netflix.
The Inbetweeners originally aired on Channel 4 between 2008 and 2010. It followed the lives of suburban teenagers navigating school life, friendship, and awkward romantic experiences. The show became a ratings success for Channel 4 and earned several awards over its three-season run.
Two feature films were made previously, in 2011 and 2014, both backed by Film4. Both movies were box-office hits, with the first setting a record for the biggest opening weekend for a UK comedy and the sequel setting a record for the biggest opening day for a comedy at the UK box office. Screen Daily reported that the 2011 film grossed £45 million in the UK and Ireland, while the 2014 sequel grossed £33.4 million.
Talk of a third Inbetweeners movie had been ongoing for years before Netflix officially confirmed the project. The new film is being made for Netflix with Film4’s support, according to Screen Daily. Netflix’s production announcement confirms that the project has moved beyond years of speculation.
The company shared a short teaser video to promote the upcoming film. The teaser shows the four leads reuniting around Simon’s yellow Fiat Cinquecento. The film is being produced by Claire Jones along with Patrick Holland from Banijay and Mark Lesbirel from Fudge Park Productions. Executive producers include Caroline Levy, Caroline Leddy, Phil Gilbert, Suzanne Knight, Tom Jordan, Farhana Bhula, and the show’s creators.
Damon Beesley and Iain Morris said it had been “super-fun” hanging out with their friends again. They said they would “work hard every week” on the new film.
The Inbetweeners was known for its humor and realistic portrayal of teenage life in Britain. The series had a strong following and set ratings records for E4 during its original run.
The movie will bring back the characters from the show for another round of misadventures. It marks the franchise’s first new scripted installment since The Inbetweeners 2 in 2014.
