Rob Reiner received a posthumous Emmy Award for his performance as Albert in the FX series 'The Bear.' This marks the third Emmy he won in his career, though it is his first since 1978. Reiner had previously won two Emmys for his work on the sitcom 'All In the Family' in 1974 and 1978.
He was honored at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards held on Sunday evening, according to Rolling Stone. Presenter Wendi McLendon-Covey accepted the award on his behalf during the ceremony. Audience members gave Reiner a standing ovation as she presented the award.
Reiner appeared in Season 4 of 'The Bear' as Albert Schnurr, a businessman who helps the main character Ebraheim, according to a report from TheWrap. His character gave advice that led to a key plot point involving franchising the restaurant's beef sandwich. The show’s finale paid tribute to Reiner, even though he did not appear in the fifth and final season.
Ebraheim mentions Albert by name in the finale, sharing news about the franchise decision. Reiner’s final television appearance was a guest role as George Washington in an HBO sketch series. He and his wife Michele Reiner were found dead in a stabbing incident in December of last year.
Their son Nick was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the case. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and is scheduled for another court appearance on September 15. The award for Reiner is the first posthumous acting Emmy since Raúl Julia in 1995.
The gap between his last win and this one is now the longest in Emmy history for an acting award. This surpasses the previous record held by his father, Carl Reiner, who won in 1958 and again in 1995. The Bear is nominated for eight Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
The upcoming Primetime Emmy ceremony will air on Monday, September 16. Rob Reiner will be remembered during the In Memoriam segment of that event.
