Josh Kerr secured a major victory in the 1500m at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship. The race was one of the most intense seen in recent times, with competitors pushing hard throughout. Kerr won in 3 minutes 29.35 seconds at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest. Australia’s Cameron Myers finished second in 3:29.68, just 0.33 seconds behind Kerr. Americans Hobbs Kessler and Cole Hocker finished third and fourth. Kerr described the event as a moment that showcased the true spirit of athletics. He noted how the competition brought out raw emotion and effort from all involved.
This win marked the first time Kerr had claimed the World Athletics Ultimate Championship 1500m title, according to the BBC. The championship was being held for the first time and was designed to bring many of the world’s best athletes together at the end of the season. Winners of individual events received $150,000 as part of a record $10 million prize fund. Before the race, he reflected on how his recent break had helped him prepare mentally and physically. He explained that stepping away from racing allowed him to find strength within himself. Kerr had not raced since winning the Commonwealth Games mile in Glasgow on Aug. 1. Instead, he returned to the United States for a training block with the Brooks Beasts Track Club.

Athletics Weekly reported that the 1500m final was his first race over the distance in 2026. He closed the final 400 meters in 52.57 seconds and ran the final 200 in 26.02 seconds.
His performance was especially impressive given how fast he thought he might run in the future. Kerr has already had a remarkable 2026 season. He won the world indoor 3,000m title in March and then broke the world mile record in London in July. His mile record of 3:42.66 broke a mark that had stood for 27 years. During that London race he also recorded a 1500m best of 3:27.62. He said he had no words to describe his feelings after crossing the finish line. Kerr has also said he wants to carry his form into 2027 and make a run at the 1500m world record.
One major name was missing from the final. Jakob Ingebrigtsen withdrew from the 1500m after winning the 5,000m at the Ultimate Championship two days earlier. Reuters reported that the Norwegian did not want to risk racing twice in three days while continuing his recovery from Achilles surgery. His withdrawal postponed another meeting between two runners who have developed one of the sport’s biggest rivalries. Kerr still faced a deep field that included Olympic champion Hocker, Yared Nuguse, former world champion Jake Wightman and several other leading middle-distance runners. Nuguse lost a shoe with about 600 meters remaining but still finished fifth in 3:30.76.
Earlier in the evening, Great Britain’s mixed 4x400m relay team placed second behind the United States. Charlotte Henrich delivered a strong final leg that helped secure the result. Henrich gained three places during the anchor leg to move Britain into second. The British squad showed resilience and determination in their effort. The second-place finish earned each member of the British team $10,000 in prize money.
Kerr’s win was a sign of his growing presence on the global stage. He has been described as a blockbuster talent by those familiar with his career. His return to Budapest also carried special meaning because the city was the site of his 2023 world 1500m title. That victory established Kerr as one of the leading runners of his generation.
