Australia took the lead in the 68th minute when Nestory Irankunda scored from a free kick. The Socceroos held the advantage until deep into stoppage time.
Brazil substitute Rayan equalized in the 95th minute with a header that went in off the underside of the crossbar. The goal denied Australia what would have been only its second victory over Brazil.
The match was broadcast live on free-to-air television in Australia through Network 10. It was also available through Paramount+.
Australia started with Patrick Beach in goal. The defense included Alessandro Circati, Harry Souttar, Lucas Herrington and Jacob Italiano. Jackson Irvine, Paul Okon-Engstler, Aziz Behich and Connor Metcalfe were also in the starting lineup. Nestory Irankunda and Tete Yengi led the attack.
Brazil started Hugo Souza in goal with Matheuzinho, Marquinhos, Vitor Reis and Douglas Santos in defense. Danilo Santos and Bruno Guimaraes played in midfield.
Brazil's attacking group included Raphinha, Estevao, Endrick and Vinicius Junior. Matheuzinho and Vitor Reis were making their senior Brazil debuts.
Endrick returned to the Brazil lineup after dealing with a preseason injury at Real Madrid. He had played only a few minutes for his club during the early part of the season before joining the national team.
Raphinha entered the international break in strong form for Barcelona. He had scored 14 goals in seven games for the club this season before joining Brazil.
The match was officiated by Japanese referee Ryo Tanimoto.
This event marked a major moment for soccer in Australia, as it was the first Socceroos game held in Townsville. A sold-out crowd of more than 25,000 attended the match at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.
Brazil had several chances during the game but struggled to break through Australia's defense. Australia also created opportunities and remained competitive against the five-time world champions.
Irankunda's goal appeared likely to give Australia a memorable victory. Brazil continued to press late in the match before Rayan finally scored from a corner.
The match was the first of two friendlies between Australia and Brazil in Queensland. The teams are scheduled to meet again on Tuesday in Brisbane.
Australia is using the matches as part of its preparations for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia. Brazil is beginning a new international cycle after its elimination from the 2026 World Cup.
The Townsville draw gave Australia a strong result against one of international football's most successful teams while giving both coaches another chance to evaluate players ahead of future competitions.
