Netflix is preparing to remove several television shows from its streaming service in October. The departures are part of the regular rotation of licensed movies and television programs on the platform.
Some titles are being removed due to licensing agreements expiring. Netflix has long relied on a mix of licensed and original content to attract subscribers.
Netflix has now published an official list of titles leaving its U.S. service in October. Several popular series are included, with some offering hundreds of episodes that have been available to subscribers for months or years.
Halo is scheduled to leave Netflix on October 1. Both seasons of the live-action science-fiction series are currently available. The show stars Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and originally aired on Paramount+.
Dawson’s Creek will leave on October 3. All six seasons of the teen drama are scheduled to depart. The series follows Dawson, Joey, Pacey and Jen as they grow up in the fictional town of Capeside.
Dawson’s Creek has had a long history on Netflix. The show returned to the service after previously leaving and has remained a popular licensed title.
Nurse Jackie is scheduled to leave Netflix on October 7. All seven seasons of the medical comedy-drama are included. The series stars Edie Falco as an emergency room nurse in New York.
Poldark will leave on October 8. All five seasons of the British historical drama are scheduled to disappear from Netflix in the United States. The series follows Ross Poldark after he returns to Cornwall following the American Revolutionary War.
Another major departure is Shameless. The U.S. version of the comedy-drama is scheduled to leave on October 11, according to What’s on Netflix. All 11 seasons are expected to depart.
Shameless has been one of Netflix’s longer-running licensed television titles. What’s on Netflix reports that the series has generated more than 2 billion viewing hours during its time on the service.
Detroiters is scheduled to leave Netflix on October 16. The Comedy Central sitcom stars Sam Richardson and Tim Robinson and ran for two seasons.
Parish is expected to leave on October 24. The six-episode crime drama stars Giancarlo Esposito and originally aired on AMC.
Gossip Girl is scheduled to leave Netflix on October 28. The teen drama has moved on and off Netflix over the years as licensing agreements changed.
Two series are scheduled to leave on October 29. Deadwind is confirmed by Netflix to be departing with all three seasons. The Finnish crime drama follows detective Sofia Karppi as she investigates murders in Helsinki.
NOS4A2 is also expected to leave on October 29. The two-season horror series stars Zachary Quinto and is based on the novel by Joe Hill.
The departures amount to hundreds of television episodes. What’s on Netflix estimated that more than 560 episodes from major licensed shows are scheduled to leave during October.
The list also includes a large number of movies. Netflix says all five Hunger Games films currently on the service will leave on October 14. Other movie departures during the month include Fargo, Clueless, Ghostbusters, Gone Girl, Apollo 13, The Boss Baby and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.
The removals do not necessarily mean Netflix is abandoning licensed programming. The service continues to acquire television shows and movies from outside studios. What’s on Netflix noted that Netflix is also adding or maintaining rights to other multi-season shows including NCIS and Mayor of Kingstown.
Streaming licenses are often issued for a fixed period. When those agreements expire, Netflix can renew the rights or allow the title to leave. A show can also return later if a new licensing agreement is reached.
Removal dates can change. Netflix and rights holders sometimes extend agreements shortly before a scheduled departure. Availability also varies by country, so the October list applies specifically to Netflix in the United States.
The departures give viewers only a few weeks to finish several long-running shows. Fans hoping to watch Dawson’s Creek, Nurse Jackie, Poldark or Shameless may need to move quickly before the series leave the platform.
For now, the October removals show how quickly streaming catalogs can change. Even popular programs can disappear when licensing agreements expire.
