Curry Barker’s film Anything But Ghosts is scheduled to hit theaters on May 7 2027. The movie marks a new chapter for the director following the success of his horror film Obsession. Barker is again working with longtime collaborator Cooper Tomlinson on the project.
Focus Features and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster announced the nationwide theatrical release date. Focus Features holds worldwide rights to the film while Universal Pictures International will handle international distribution.
Anything But Ghosts is a horror-comedy about a group of fame-seeking wannabe ghost hunters who find themselves facing something far more dangerous than they expected. Barker and Tomlinson co-wrote the screenplay and will also appear as the film’s central characters.
The story focuses on two fraudulent paranormal investigators who make a living pretending to remove spirits from homes. Their scheme changes when they are called to a situation involving what appear to be real ghosts. The film then moves from comedy into increasingly frightening territory.
Barker has said the premise gives him more room for comedy than his previous films. He has also stressed that the danger in the story remains serious and that the movie will still be frightening.
Production on Anything But Ghosts took place in Vancouver and wrapped earlier in 2026.
The cast includes Violet McGraw and Chris Reinacher. Bryce Dallas Howard and Aaron Paul also appear in the film. Barker has praised Howard and Paul for their work on the project.
The film continues Barker’s creative partnership with Tomlinson. The pair previously worked together through their That’s a Bad Idea comedy channel and later collaborated on feature projects including Milk & Serial and Obsession.
Anything But Ghosts follows Barker’s rise in the horror genre after Obsession became a major theatrical success. Focus Features distributed that film and is now working with Barker again on his next original project.
Barker has described Anything But Ghosts as very different from Obsession while still reflecting his approach to horror. He has said he likes placing supernatural or impossible events inside grounded worlds where the characters react as if those events are happening in real life.
Tomlinson has also discussed the unusual balance of comedy and horror in the movie. The combination is expected to allow the film to begin with humor before moving into more disturbing supernatural material.
The May release will place Anything But Ghosts at the start of the 2027 summer movie season. Several major studio releases are expected during the same period which could make the opening weeks highly competitive.
Focus Features currently lists Anything But Ghosts as in production. More promotional material including a trailer and additional story details are expected before the film arrives in theaters.
The May 7 2027 release date gives Barker another major theatrical opportunity less than a year after Obsession reached audiences. Anything But Ghosts will give viewers their next look at Barker’s mix of comedy and horror while expanding his work with Tomlinson and a larger ensemble cast.
