Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton suffered a severe ankle injury during Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. The injury occurred in the fourth quarter when his left foot bent awkwardly under Raiders safety Treydan Stukes during a tackle. Medical staff quickly attended to him on the field and applied a protective air cast before he was carted off.

Head coach Andy Reid said the injury was serious and came at a difficult time for the team. Reid added that Thornton had been having an excellent season before the incident.

Thornton’s play was a key moment in the game as he made a 55-yard catch that put Kansas City near the goal line. Kenneth Walker III scored the go-ahead touchdown on the next play. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes praised Thornton and expressed support for him after the game.

Mahomes said he understood how difficult it was to be sidelined after a big play. Following further medical tests on Monday sources reported that Thornton would miss between 12 and 16 weeks. He also tore ligaments in the ankle and is expected to undergo surgery this week.

This injury is a major blow to the Chiefs’ receiving corps especially with Thornton and Rashee Rice both sidelined. Rice left the game in the first quarter due to a hamstring injury. He made a short reception before leaving the field and did not return.

Thornton had been one of the team's top performers through the first four weeks of the season. He has 11 catches for 219 yards and two touchdowns this season.

The Chiefs are now looking at their options at wide receiver including a possible reunion with veteran Tyreek Hill. Hill’s agent Drew Rosenhaus said negotiations with interested teams would begin this week. Kansas City is among the teams that have expressed interest.

Hill has not played since suffering a serious knee injury in September 2025. He was released by the Miami Dolphins during the offseason and has been working toward a return.

The Chiefs may now rely more heavily on receivers such as Xavier Worthy while Rice’s status remains uncertain. Worthy had four catches for 70 yards against Las Vegas.

The team’s depth chart has shifted significantly due to these injuries. Thornton's injury marks a turning point for the Chiefs’ offense in the short term. The team’s ability to maintain offensive production will depend on how quickly other players step up.

Kansas City enters its bye week with a 4-0 record. Thornton still has a chance to return late in the season or during the playoffs if his recovery stays on schedule.
