Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will lead the fifth season of HBO’s *True Detective*, bringing two veteran film stars into the crime anthology as it prepares to return with a new mystery. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, with Issa López returning after overseeing *True Detective: Night Country*.
Cage will play Henry Logan, while Banderas will portray Rai García. HBO has not released a full description of either character or explained how the two men fit into the central investigation.
The casting gives Season 5 two actors with long movie careers but relatively limited histories as television leads. Cage, an Academy Award winner for *Leaving Las Vegas*, recently took on his first starring television role in Prime Video’s *Spider-Noir*. Banderas has worked in television before, including his Emmy-nominated performance as Pablo Picasso in National Geographic’s *Genius*.
The Hollywood Reporter, Variety and Deadline reported Friday that the actors will headline the new season. The announcement ends months of uncertainty surrounding Cage, who had been linked to the project since 2025 and recently hinted at his involvement during an appearance at New York Comic Con.
Banderas is the major new addition to the cast. The Spanish actor is known for films including *The Mask of Zorro*, *The Legend of Zorro* and several collaborations with director Pedro Almodóvar. He has also voiced Puss in Boots in the *Shrek* franchise.
Season 5 is expected to move the series to Jamaica Bay in New York. The location marks another major geographic shift for an anthology that has repeatedly used setting as an important part of its stories.
The first season unfolded in Louisiana and starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Season 2 moved to California, while Season 3 centered on an investigation in the Ozarks. The fourth season, subtitled *Night Country*, moved the story to the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska, with Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in the lead roles.
López will again have a central creative role in the series. She is returning as showrunner, writer, director and executive producer after taking charge of the fourth season. Daniel Zelman is also attached as a writer and executive producer.
The fifth season will continue the anthology format, meaning it will introduce a new central case and a new group of characters rather than simply continuing the investigation from *Night Country*. López has previously said the new story exists in the same broader universe as the fourth season, leaving open the possibility of thematic or narrative connections.
For now, HBO is keeping the main mystery under wraps. No detailed plot summary has been released, and the network has not explained the relationship between Logan and García.
That uncertainty is important because some early reports have described Logan as a detective, while other coverage has stopped short of confirming the occupations of both characters. Until HBO releases fuller character descriptions, it is safer to treat their exact roles as undisclosed.
The casting announcement also gives the new season unusually recognizable leads. Cage has built a career across dramas, action films, comedies and independent projects, while Banderas has moved between Hollywood productions, Spanish-language films, stage work and voice acting.
Cage’s recent television work is especially notable because most of his career has been spent in movies. His role in *Spider-Noir* marked a significant move into serialized television after decades as a film star. *True Detective* will give him another chance to work in a darker crime-driven setting, although HBO has not yet revealed whether Henry Logan will resemble the troubled investigators who have anchored earlier seasons.
Banderas arrives with experience playing both dramatic and larger-than-life characters. His portrayal of Picasso in *Genius* earned an Emmy nomination, showing that he already has experience carrying a prestige television production built around an intense central performance.
*True Detective* has relied on major actors since its 2014 debut. McConaughey and Harrelson helped establish the show with its first season, followed by performers including Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali, Stephen Dorff, Foster and Reis.
The fourth season became the most-watched installment of the series, according to HBO figures cited by Variety, with 12.7 million cross-platform viewers. That success helped establish López as the creative force behind the franchise’s next chapter.
Season 5 will also bring back several executive producers associated with earlier installments. Cage and Banderas are expected to serve as executive producers as well, alongside López and other returning producers connected to the series.
No premiere date has been announced. Because production is not expected to begin until 2027, viewers will likely have to wait for further casting news, filming details and a clearer description of the Jamaica Bay story before HBO sets a release schedule.
The most important confirmed details are now in place: Cage and Banderas will lead the cast, López will return to guide the season, and production is planned for 2027. The central case, supporting cast and exact relationship between Henry Logan and Rai García remain undisclosed.
