FX has renewed American Horror Story for a 14th season, extending the horror anthology after the strong streaming launch of its current installment. The decision was announced on October 20, nine days before the Season 13 finale is scheduled to air on FX.

The renewal gives the franchise another chapter after a season built around returning characters, familiar settings and storylines from earlier installments. FX has not announced a title, theme, cast or premiere date for Season 14, so details about the next story remain open.

Season 13 premiered on September 24 with three episodes. Disney+ says the 13-episode season continues with two new episodes on October 22 before the finale arrives October 29. That means the finale had not yet aired when the renewal was announced.

The current season has become a major streaming success for the franchise. Variety reported that the three-episode premiere generated about 4 million views worldwide across Hulu and Disney+ during its first four days. The publication described that as the strongest streaming premiere in American Horror Story history.

TheWrap reported that Season 13 also became Ryan Murphy's largest launch to date on Hulu and Disney+. It also reached Nielsen's Streaming Top 10, giving FX another measure of the show's audience beyond its traditional cable broadcast.

That performance followed an unusually long break between installments. Nielsen said 29 months passed between the finale of Season 12, Delicate, and the September 24 return of American Horror Story. Even without new episodes during most of that period, the show's library continued to attract substantial viewing.

From May 2024 through August 2026, U.S. viewers streamed more than 7 billion minutes of American Horror Story on Hulu, according to Nielsen. Coven was the most-watched installment during that span by total minutes, narrowly ahead of Murder House. Nielsen also found that viewing accelerated before Season 13 premiered, reaching 623 million minutes in August alone.

Season 13 is designed as a crossover that draws from much of the show's past. Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman, Joey Pollari and Jessica Lange are among the season's principal cast members.

Other performers include Avantika, Jamie Brewer, Elle Chapman, Berto Colon, Alex Consani, Frances Conroy, Mat Fraser, Seth Gabel, Orlando Jones, Paul Anthony Kelly, John Carroll Lynch, Tig Notaro, Madelaine Petsch, Fedor Steer, Mena Suvari, Zach Villa and John Waters. Several actors reprise characters from earlier seasons while others join the franchise for the first time.

The story begins with Ben DeSoto, played by Pollari, a hospice worker whose fear of the number 13 becomes central to the season. He is assigned to care for a mysterious patient in a Manhattan building called the Apollyon. The building eventually becomes a meeting point for characters and supernatural forces tied to earlier installments.

The season's larger story brings witches, ghosts and other figures from across the anthology into a shared conflict. The Apollyon also contains a portal to Hell beneath the building, connecting the new storyline with characters and mythology established in earlier seasons.

That approach turns Season 13 into one of the franchise's most direct celebrations of its own history. Jessica Lange returned after a long absence and has reprised several of her best-known characters, including Constance Langdon, Sister Jude Martin, Fiona Goode and Elsa Mars.

American Horror Story debuted in 2011 with Murder House and has since shifted settings and characters from season to season. Previous installments have focused on an asylum, a witch coven, a traveling freak show, a haunted hotel, an apocalypse, a summer camp and New York City, among other settings.

The series has also remained one of FX's most durable scripted properties. Variety described it as the network's longest-running hour-long series and reported that the franchise has generated more than 2 billion hours of engagement worldwide since its launch. It has also received more than 100 Emmy nominations and won 17 Primetime Emmy Awards.

Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk created the series and continue to serve as executive producers. Season 13 also lists Ned Martel, Charlie Carver, Eric Kovtun, Nissa Diederich, Scott Robertson, Tanase Popa, Crystle Roberson Dorsey, Jennifer Salt and Tim Minear as executive producers. The series is produced by 20th Television.

The Season 14 renewal is the first new pickup since FX ordered three seasons at once in January 2020. That earlier deal covered Seasons 11, 12 and 13, making the new order the first time in several years that the network has extended the series beyond that package.

The renewal also arrives before viewers know how the current crossover story ends. Episodes 11 and 12 are scheduled for October 22, while Episode 13 is due October 29. The schedule gives FX a chance to promote the next season while the franchise is still in the middle of its highest-profile run in years.

No plot information for Season 14 has been released, and FX has not said which cast members will return. Because American Horror Story regularly changes its setting and ensemble, the next season could continue the current crossover approach or return to a more self-contained story.

For now, the immediate focus remains on the final three episodes of Season 13. The October 29 finale will close the 13-episode crossover, while FX's renewal guarantees that American Horror Story will continue beyond it.
