Arsenal fought back to secure a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at the Allianz Arena in Germany. Declan Rice scored an 82nd-minute equalizer after Harry Kane had put Bayern ahead from the penalty spot. The result extended Arsenal's unbeaten start to the competition despite an early injury to Bukayo Saka.

Eberechi Eze gave Arsenal the lead in the 25th minute after replacing the injured Saka. Alphonso Davies equalized for Bayern ten minutes later before Kane converted a penalty in the second half. Rice then delivered the final goal of a match in which both teams created opportunities to secure victory.

The match brought together two of Europe's leading clubs in an important league-phase encounter. Arsenal entered the contest following Champions League victories over Napoli and Lille, while Bayern were looking to strengthen their position in the competition.

Saka Injury Forces Early Change

Arsenal suffered an early setback when Saka experienced pain in his upper leg while attempting a pass. The England international was unable to continue and left the field after approximately ten minutes, forcing manager Mikel Arteta to make an unexpected substitution.

Eze replaced Saka and quickly made an impact. In the 25th minute, Martin Ødegaard delivered a well-placed pass that allowed Eze to move into Bayern's penalty area. The midfielder finished confidently past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to give Arsenal a 1-0 advantage.

The goal rewarded Arsenal's attacking approach and demonstrated their ability to respond to losing a key player. Rather than retreating after the substitution, the visitors continued pressing Bayern and creating openings.

Bayern responded through Kane, whose passing proved just as important as his finishing. The England captain delivered a precise through ball to Davies, who advanced into the penalty area and beat Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya in the 35th minute.

The equalizer restored Bayern's confidence and set up an evenly contested second half. Both teams pressed aggressively and looked for opportunities to exploit gaps in their opponents' defenses.

Kane Gives Bayern the Lead

Kane became the central figure again in the 61st minute when his shot struck the arm of Arsenal defender Jurriën Timber. The referee awarded Bayern a penalty, giving the former Tottenham Hotspur striker an opportunity to put his team ahead.

Kane converted from the spot to make the score 2-1. The goal was his 16th against Arsenal in 22 appearances, continuing his impressive scoring record against the London club.

The penalty also marked a significant Champions League achievement. Kane became only the second player, after Cristiano Ronaldo, to score in ten consecutive appearances in the competition. Ronaldo established an 11-match scoring streak between 2017 and 2018.

Kane's performance extended beyond his goal. His passing helped Bayern move the ball through Arsenal's defense, and his assist for Davies demonstrated his ability to create chances for teammates.

Bayern were competing without Michael Olise, who was suspended, and Joshua Kimmich, who was absent following a death in his family. Despite those absences, the German side maintained considerable attacking pressure.

Rice Delivers Late Equalizer

Arsenal continued searching for an equalizer as the match entered its final stages. Their persistence paid off in the 82nd minute when Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyökeres combined during a quick attacking move.

Gyökeres provided the decisive pass for Rice, who advanced into the penalty area and struck a low shot beyond Neuer. The finish brought Arsenal level and prevented Bayern from claiming all three points.

Rice's goal was particularly important because Arsenal had appeared headed toward their first defeat in 14 Champions League group-stage or league-phase matches. Instead, the midfielder's intervention preserved their unbeaten run.

The goal was also Rice's first away from home in the Champions League. According to Opta, it was his sixth overall in the competition and came during a match in which Arsenal demonstrated their ability to recover after falling behind.

Arsenal nearly completed the comeback during stoppage time. Timber attempted a curling shot from outside the penalty area, but Neuer produced a strong save to prevent the visitors from taking the lead.

The goalkeeper had already made several important interventions. Earlier in the second half, Neuer denied Bruno Guimarães with an exceptional close-range save that sent the ball against the crossbar.

Raya was equally important at the opposite end. The Arsenal goalkeeper made several stops as Bayern threatened to extend their advantage, including a notable save from a Dayot Upamecano attempt.

Arteta Praises Arsenal's Performance

Arteta expressed satisfaction with Arsenal's response against one of Europe's strongest opponents. Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, he praised the intensity and attacking ambition shown by both teams.

"What a game," Arteta said, describing the contest as one of Arsenal's strongest performances against high-level opposition.

The Arsenal manager emphasized that his players had approached the match determined to attack rather than simply defend against Bayern. His team finished with more possession and more shots despite playing away from home.

However, Arteta's main concern after the match was Saka's injury. He confirmed that the winger had experienced sharp pain and that Arsenal's medical staff were worried about the possibility of a significant problem.

"They are a bit concerned," Arteta told TNT Sports. He added that the club would need further information before determining the seriousness of the injury.

Saka's availability could become especially important as Arsenal prepare for a demanding schedule involving domestic and European competitions. His departure also limited Arteta's attacking options during an already challenging fixture.

Result Extends Arsenal's Unbeaten Run

The draw represented another competitive meeting between Arsenal and Bayern, two clubs with a lengthy Champions League history. Bayern had previously eliminated Arsenal in the 2023-24 quarterfinals, making this latest encounter another important test for Arteta's side.

According to Opta, the match was only the second time Arsenal had scored first, fallen behind and recovered to avoid defeat in the European Cup or Champions League. The previous occasion was also a 2-2 draw against Bayern, in April 2024.

Neuer reached a personal milestone by making his 163rd Champions League appearance. That moved him level with Lionel Messi and Thomas Müller on the competition's all-time appearances list, behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Iker Casillas.

Both teams remained unbeaten in the competition following the draw. Arsenal's ability to recover from a second-half deficit was encouraging, although the uncertainty surrounding Saka's fitness remained an immediate concern.

Arsenal next face Everton in the Premier League on Saturday, October 24, before continuing a demanding run of fixtures. Their next Champions League match is scheduled against Slavia Prague on November 4, when Arteta will hope to have more clarity about Saka's recovery.
