Italian racing driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli became the youngest Formula One world champion in history on Sunday, November 1, 2026, after finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver secured his first Drivers' World Championship with four races remaining, breaking a record that had stood since 2010.
Antonelli, aged 20 years and 68 days, surpassed Sebastian Vettel, who was 23 years and 134 days old when he won his first championship with Red Bull. The achievement also made Antonelli the first Italian driver to win Formula One's top individual title since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
Max Verstappen won the 71-lap race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, finishing just 0.799 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Antonelli crossed the finish line in third place, approximately four seconds behind Verstappen, completing the result he needed to secure the championship.
Antonelli Secures Championship With Four Races Remaining
Antonelli arrived in Mexico City knowing that a ninth-place finish would be enough to guarantee the world championship, regardless of what his closest rivals achieved. The Mercedes driver had established a substantial advantage through an exceptionally successful season.
Starting fourth, Antonelli maintained a competitive position throughout a race disrupted by crashes, penalties and interruptions. Rather than taking unnecessary risks, he concentrated on protecting his championship position while pursuing another podium finish.
His approach proved successful despite the unpredictable nature of the afternoon. Antonelli remained among the leading drivers and eventually claimed third place, securing his 17th podium finish of the season.
The result ended the championship battle well before the final race. With four rounds remaining, neither Hamilton nor Mercedes teammate George Russell could collect enough points to overturn Antonelli's lead.
The championship represented an extraordinary achievement for a driver competing in only his second Formula One season. Antonelli had entered the sport with considerable expectations after Mercedes selected him to replace Hamilton following the seven-time champion's move to Ferrari.
His victory also continued Mercedes' history of producing world champions. Antonelli became the first graduate of the team's junior driver program to win the Formula One Drivers' Championship.
Verstappen Wins Dramatic Mexico City Grand Prix
Although Antonelli claimed the championship, Verstappen delivered the winning performance in Mexico City. The Red Bull driver started fifth and worked his way through the field to secure his third victory of the 2026 season.
Hamilton began the race from pole position but quickly found himself battling Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc. The pair fought for position through the opening corners, creating an opportunity for Verstappen to move forward.
Leclerc briefly gained an advantage by leaving the track during the opening exchanges. Race officials later handed him a five-second penalty for leaving the circuit and gaining an advantage.
Verstappen took control and maintained his lead through several difficult periods. Hamilton challenged him during the closing stages, but the Red Bull driver managed to remain ahead.
The race was interrupted by a major crash involving Cadillac driver Valtteri Bottas. The accident brought out red flags and temporarily stopped the competition while officials cleared the damaged car and assessed the conditions.
Later, contact between McLaren driver Oscar Piastri and Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad sent Lindblad into the barriers. The resulting safety-car period brought the field closer together and created another opportunity for positions to change.
Verstappen survived the restart and crossed the finish line less than a second ahead of Hamilton. Antonelli followed in third, sharing the podium with two of the most successful drivers of their generation.
George Russell Penalized After Collision With Hadjar
Mercedes teammate George Russell experienced a considerably more difficult race. Starting near the front of the grid, Russell lost several positions during the opening stages.
His afternoon became more complicated after contact with Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar at Turn 6. Race stewards determined that Russell was responsible for the collision and imposed a 10-second penalty.
Despite the setback, Russell recovered to finish sixth. The result was not enough to prevent Antonelli from securing the Drivers' Championship.
Leclerc finished fourth after serving his penalty, while McLaren's Lando Norris completed the top five. Piastri recovered to finish seventh, followed by Franco Colapinto, Liam Lawson and Pierre Gasly.
The incidents demonstrated the challenges facing the field during a race that included several disruptions. Antonelli's ability to avoid major trouble helped him complete the championship-winning performance.
Mercedes Celebrates Antonelli's Historic Achievement
Antonelli was emotional after crossing the finish line and realizing that he had become world champion. The young driver had spent years working toward the opportunity, progressing rapidly from junior racing to Formula One.
Speaking after the race, Antonelli thanked Mercedes, his family and the people who had supported him throughout his career.
"I wouldn't be here without Mercedes, without my family," he said during his post-race interview, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to compete at the highest level.
Antonelli also acknowledged the pressure surrounding the championship weekend. Knowing that he could secure the title in Mexico City had increased the tension, even though his points advantage placed him in a strong position.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised the Italian's development and the decision to promote him to Formula One at such a young age. Wolff said the team had always believed in Antonelli's potential, even during difficult periods in his debut season.
The championship rewarded that confidence. After a challenging first year, Antonelli returned in 2026 with greater consistency and established himself as the driver to beat.
His season included nine Grand Prix victories, beginning with a breakthrough triumph in China. He followed that success with additional wins in Japan, Miami, Canada and Monaco.
Victories later in the year helped strengthen his championship advantage. By the time Formula One arrived in Mexico, Antonelli had already built a lead that made the title increasingly difficult for his rivals to challenge.
Youngest Champion Breaks Sebastian Vettel's Record
Antonelli's victory changed a significant Formula One record. Vettel had held the distinction of being the youngest world champion since winning the 2010 championship with Red Bull.
Vettel was 23 years and 134 days old when he claimed his first title. Antonelli lowered that benchmark by more than three years, becoming the first Formula One driver to win the championship at age 20.
Before Antonelli's achievement, Hamilton had been the third-youngest champion, winning his first title in 2008 at 23 years and 300 days. Fernando Alonso was 24 years and 58 days old when he became champion in 2005.
Max Verstappen secured his first championship in 2021 at 24 years and 73 days. His title followed a controversial final race in Abu Dhabi involving a late safety-car restart.
Antonelli's championship was different because he secured it before the season ended. Four races remained on the calendar when he crossed the finish line in Mexico City.
The result also holds special importance for Italian motorsport. Italy had not produced a Formula One world champion since Ascari won consecutive championships in 1952 and 1953.
Antonelli became the third Italian driver to claim the title, following Ascari and Giuseppe Farina. Farina won the inaugural Formula One World Championship in 1950.
Formula One Championship Moves to Brazil
Although the Drivers' Championship has been decided, the 2026 Formula One season continues with four remaining events. The next race is the São Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos in Brazil on November 8.
The championship then travels to Las Vegas on November 21, Qatar on November 29 and Abu Dhabi on December 6. The remaining races will determine the final positions in the Drivers' Championship and settle the Constructors' Championship.
Mercedes enters the closing stages in a strong position in the team standings. However, its Constructors' Championship had not yet been secured following the Mexico City race.
For Antonelli, the final four races provide an opportunity to build on his record-breaking season without the pressure of defending his championship lead. His next appearance will come in Brazil, where Formula One will race for the first time since his historic title victory.
The 2026 championship is already his, and the record he established in Mexico City places the 20-year-old Italian among the most significant young champions in Formula One history.
