Nico Schlotterbeck's future at Borussia Dortmund may be shorter than his freshly signed contract suggests. The 26-year-old German international extended his deal with the Bundesliga club through 2031, but according to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, the new terms include a release clause accessible to only a handful of top European clubs.
That clause reportedly sits in the range of €50 million to €60 million (approximately £43.5 million to £52.2 million) — a figure that could represent a bargain for a centre-back entering his prime on a long-term deal. Real Madrid are believed to be among the clubs eligible to activate the clause, and reporting from German outlet BILD indicates Liverpool are likely on that exclusive list as well.
For Liverpool, the question isn't whether Schlotterbeck is an appealing target — it's whether the timing is right. The Reds are understood to be making progress on a contract extension for Ibrahima Konaté, and with Virgil van Dijk, the 20-year-old Jeremy Jacquet, and teenage prospect Giovanni Leoni already on the books, centre-back depth isn't the club's most urgent concern.
Still, the long-term picture tells a different story. Van Dijk turns 35 later this year, and Liverpool will eventually need a top-level successor. At 26, Schlotterbeck fits the profile of a player who could anchor the defense for years to come.
For now, Liverpool appear more focused on addressing needs further up the pitch. But should contract negotiations with Konaté stall or another defensive need arise, Schlotterbeck's surprisingly accessible release clause could make him too good an opportunity to pass up this summer.
