It was a statement night for the home teams across the NBA's first full slate of 2026 playoff action. Three series openers were decided Saturday, and in each one, the higher seed seized early control — with Nikola Jokić turning in the evening's most breathtaking performance, a vintage triple-double that dismantled the Minnesota Timberwolves and set the tone for what promises to be one of the postseason's marquee matchups.

In Denver, Jokić was simply unguardable. The big man finished with 25 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists as the Nuggets overpowered Minnesota 116-105 to claim a 1-0 series lead. After Minnesota jumped out to a 33-23 first-quarter advantage, Jokić and the Nuggets flipped the script with a dominant second quarter, outscoring the Wolves 39-29 to take control at the half. Denver then suffocated Minnesota in the third period, holding them to just 17 points and effectively burying any hopes of a road upset. Anthony Edwards did everything he could to keep the Wolves afloat — finishing with 22 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists — but with Jokić operating at this level, Minnesota faces a steep hill to climb.

In Cleveland, Donovan Mitchell reminded everyone why the Cavaliers are legitimate Eastern Conference contenders, pouring in 32 points to guide Cleveland past Toronto 126-113 in Game 1 of their first-round series. The Cavaliers looked comfortable throughout, leading wire-to-wire and delivering their most decisive blow in a third quarter where they outscored the Raptors 36-22 to put the game firmly out of reach. Toronto mounted a spirited fourth-quarter charge — outscoring Cleveland 37-29 in the final frame — but it was too little, too late. Scottie Barnes led the Raptors with 21 points and 7 assists and showed flashes of the talent that could make this series competitive, but Cleveland's balanced attack and Mitchell's scoring efficiency gave the Cavaliers all the cushion they needed.

Madison Square Garden provided its usual electric playoff atmosphere, and Jalen Brunson delivered exactly the kind of performance that MSG demands. The Knicks point guard orchestrated New York's 113-102 victory over the Atlanta Hawks, finishing with 28 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists to give New York a 1-0 series lead. The Knicks controlled the first quarter and the second half, fending off a second-period Hawks surge that briefly gave Atlanta the momentum. Jalen Johnson was superb for the Hawks — posting 23 points and 7 rebounds — and Atlanta's ability to compete in this one suggests the series could have some life to it. Still, with Brunson locked in and the Garden crowd roaring, New York looks very much like the team in control.

The defining narrative of the night across all three completed games was third-quarter dominance by the home teams. Cleveland outscored Toronto by 14 in the third, Denver outscored Minnesota by 12, and New York extended their lead in their own third period against Atlanta. Closing out halves and protecting leads at home will be a critical adjustment for all three road teams as these series progress.

As the night draws to a close, one more game remains in progress: the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers are battling through the third quarter, with the Lakers holding a 67-60 edge at the 3:39 mark. Los Angeles will be looking to join the home-team trend and grab a 1-0 series lead, while Houston — led by a young, athletic roster — is still very much within striking distance heading into the fourth. Check back for a full recap of that contest as the first full night of 2026 NBA playoff basketball comes to a close.
