MGM's Long-Shelved Horror Film "The Poughkeepsie Tapes" Is Now on Prime Video

John Erick Dowdle's 2007 found-footage mockumentary spent years effectively buried after MGM pulled it following its Tribeca Film Festival premiere.

"The Poughkeepsie Tapes" is now streaming on Prime Video, nearly two decades after MGM shelved it and kept it out of wide release. Director John Erick Dowdle's 2007 mockumentary built a cult reputation precisely because it was so hard to see, circulating mostly through word-of-mouth and a messy, piecemeal release history that made it feel like something forbidden.

The film is structured as a faux documentary investigating a serial killer, built around recovered surveillance footage alongside police interviews and testimony from victims' families. That procedural framework gives the material an unsettling credibility. The "recovered tapes" portion pushes it into something harsher, staging scenes of stalking, psychological manipulation, and sustained dread in a style designed to feel archival rather than cinematic. Collider described it as "a deeply unpleasant, hyper-realistic serial-killer nightmare."

Its original premiere was at the Tribeca Film Festival. MGM had scheduled a theatrical release but pulled it, and the film drifted without a stable home for years. That limbo became part of its legend, making it one of the more discussed films in the found-footage genre despite relatively few people having actually watched it all the way through.

Now on Prime Video, the film reaches its widest audience yet. For a genre that depends on making viewers feel like they've stumbled onto something they were never supposed to find, the timing might be fitting. "The Poughkeepsie Tapes" spent a long time being exactly that.
