Victor Wembanyama's playoff night ended in the second quarter Tuesday when the Spurs star suffered a concussion after a hard fall during Game 2 against the Portland Trail Blazers. He did not return, and San Antonio lost the game.

Victor Wembanyama won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award during the 2025-26 season, becoming both the youngest recipient and the first player ever to win the honor unanimously.

The San Antonio Spurs center is now the only player in NBA history to win multiple regular-season awards by unanimous vote, having also earned the 2024 Rookie of the Year award without a single dissenting ballot.

Wembanyama, 21, was born January 4, 2004, in France and was selected first overall by San Antonio in the 2023 NBA draft. His rookie season alone reshaped expectations for what a first-year player could do defensively. He led the league in blocks per game, was named to the All-Defensive First Team as both the first rookie and youngest player ever to receive that recognition, and finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting that year behind French compatriot Rudy Gobert.

His path to the NBA ran through the French professional league, the LNB Pro A, where he began playing at 15 for Nanterre 92. He later moved to ASVEL, winning a Pro A title, then signed with Metropolitans 92 for the 2022-23 season. That year he became the youngest player to win the Pro A MVP award, led the league in scoring, rebounds and blocks, and took home Best Defender honors as well.

Internationally, Wembanyama has represented France at multiple levels. He set a FIBA record for blocks per game in a single tournament at the 2021 Under-19 World Cup and won a silver medal with the senior national team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Standing at an unusual combination of height, wingspan and agility, Wembanyama drew comparisons to no previous player when he entered the draft. Scouts and executives described him as a generational prospect, and his early NBA results have sustained that assessment.

The Defensive Player of the Year award has been given annually since 1983. Previous winners include Gobert, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Dikembe Mutombo, none of whom won it unanimously.

The injury adds serious uncertainty to San Antonio's postseason outlook. Wembanyama, the 22-year-old French center and reigning Rookie of the Year, is the centerpiece of the Spurs' rebuild and their most irreplaceable player on the floor. Concussion protocol requires players to pass a series of evaluations before being cleared for contact, and there is no set timeline for his return.

No date has been announced for when Wembanyama might be cleared to play in Game 3.
