The Florida-based airline had already filed for bankruptcy protection in late 2024, part of a prolonged financial crisis driven by rising fuel costs, heavy debt, and a failed merger with Frontier Airlines. A proposed acquisition by JetBlue was blocked by federal regulators in 2024 on antitrust grounds, removing what had been seen as a possible path to stability.
Spirit emerged from its initial bankruptcy restructuring but continued to struggle with weak demand for its bare-bones model and an inability to compete effectively against larger carriers that have expanded their own lower-cost fare options.
