Spirit Airlines is preparing to shut down after talks to secure rescue financing collapsed, according to the Financial Times, marking a potentially final chapter for one of the largest ultra-low-cost carriers in the United States.

The Florida-based airline had already filed for bankruptcy protection in late 2024, part of a prolonged financial crisis driven by rising fuel costs, heavy debt, and a failed merger with Frontier Airlines. A proposed acquisition by JetBlue was blocked by federal regulators in 2024 on antitrust grounds, removing what had been seen as a possible path to stability.

Spirit emerged from its initial bankruptcy restructuring but continued to struggle with weak demand for its bare-bones model and an inability to compete effectively against larger carriers that have expanded their own lower-cost fare options. The airline has been operating under significant financial constraints for months, cutting routes and grounding aircraft to reduce costs.

Bailout talks represent the latest and apparently final attempt to keep the carrier airborne. With those negotiations now reported to have foundered, the airline is moving toward a wind-down rather than a reorganization.

A full cessation of operations would affect thousands of employees and leave passengers holding Spirit tickets without a carrier. Spirit operates a route network focused heavily on leisure travelers, connecting smaller markets and vacation destinations in the U.S., Caribbean, and Latin America.

The airline's collapse would also reduce capacity on price-sensitive routes where Spirit's presence has historically kept fares low. Industry analysts have noted that in markets where Spirit competed, average ticket prices tended to be lower across all carriers. Its exit could push fares higher on those routes.

No official announcement from the airline had been made as of Thursday, and the precise timeline for any shutdown remains unclear.
