A "Game of Thrones" video game that spent over a year in early access is picking up momentum ahead of its full release next week. NetMarble's "Game of Thrones: Kingsroad" recorded more than 17,000 active users on Steam within a 24-hour period following its pre-launch release on May 14, according to Screen Rant, citing SteamDB data.
The game's grand launch is scheduled for May 21, 2026, across PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as mobile platforms on Google's Android and Apple's iOS.
Kingsroad is set during the events of HBO's "Game of Thrones" series. Players take on the role of a lesser Northern noble navigating political turmoil, battling enemies across Westeros, and encountering familiar characters from the show while exploring semi-open regions inspired by the series. The game features original RPG progression systems and storytelling that runs alongside the show's narrative timeline.
The early access period was not without problems. Players raised consistent complaints about mobile-oriented monetization features, describing the game as essentially a mobile port with paywalls built into a PC environment. Technical issues also drew criticism, with players pointing to clunky systems and a difficult user interface.
Despite those criticisms, the pre-launch player numbers suggest a significant level of interest from the franchise's fanbase. "Game of Thrones" has long lacked a well-regarded open-world RPG adaptation, with previous attempts either underdelivering, leaning on real-time strategy formats, or being canceled before release.
The game is currently available for free on PC and mobile ahead of next week's official launch.
