The Seattle Mariners called up top prospect Colt Emerson on Sunday, adding the No. 6-ranked prospect in baseball to their roster for his major league debut, nearly two months before his 21st birthday.

The move was triggered by an injury. Brendan Donovan, who had already been out of the starting lineup, was placed on the 10-day injured list with a groin strain shortly before Sunday's game against the San Diego Padres. Manager Dan Wilson had told reporters earlier in the day that Donovan was being managed day to day, but the IL placement came pregame and the team immediately announced Emerson's promotion from Triple-A Tacoma.

According to CBS Sports, the Mariners gave Emerson a chance to win a roster spot out of Spring Training and then signed him to a $95 million contract in early April, signaling how much the organization values his long-term ceiling. The call-up Sunday was the next step in a process that had been building for months.

Emerson posted nine home runs and 11 stolen bases in his first 44 games at Triple-A this season. His contact rate on pitches in the strike zone sits at 86.5 percent, and scouts have noted at least average power for a 20-year-old. He is hitting .255 at Triple-A with a 27.2 percent strikeout rate, a product of an aggressive approach at the plate that scouts believe he can manage at the next level.

CBS Sports reported that one analyst compared Emerson to Corey Seager in a preseason top-100 prospects list that had Emerson ranked No. 10 overall. The Mariners are expected to use him as their everyday third baseman for as long as Donovan remains on the injured list, with the possibility of shifting him to shortstop or second base depending on how he performs.

Sunday's game against the Padres carried extra stakes for Seattle. According to a Yahoo Sports preview, the Mariners had not won a single game against San Diego all season and were trying to avoid a series sweep. George Kirby started on the mound for Seattle. The game aired on NBC and Peacock, with Jason Benetti and Jake Peavy calling the action alongside Ryan Rowland-Smith.

Emerson's debut came as part of a broader wave of top prospects reaching the majors this season. He enters an organization that has invested heavily in his future and now needs him to contribute immediately.
