Netflix's Man on Fire has pulled in 70 million hours viewed in just under a month since debuting on the platform at the end of April, according to Collider, citing Netflix's own Tudum data. The series has remained on Netflix's Top 10 TV list for three straight weeks, a run that positions it as a strong candidate for renewal.
The show follows John Creasy, a former Special Forces operative played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who is struggling with PTSD after a mission gone wrong. He takes up security work on the advice of his old friend Paul Rayburn, played by Bobby Cannavale. When an attack kills Rayburn's family, Creasy sets out for revenge, with one survivor in tow: the Rayburn daughter, Poe, played by Billie Boullet.
The series draws from A.J. Quinnell's original novel but takes a different approach from the 2004 Denzel Washington film that many viewers may remember. Rather than protecting a wealthy young heiress, this version of Creasy becomes responsible for Poe, the sole member of the Rayburn family to survive the bombing. That shift gives the show a more personal emotional core, with Creasy driven not just by vengeance but by an ongoing obligation to keep someone alive.
Abdul-Mateen II has spoken about how the show resists the temptation to portray its lead as an unstoppable action hero. "The cool thing about this show is we're not watching someone that's at the top of his game. We're watching someone who is trying to rebuild himself and who has doubts about whether he can still do the thing that he's always done," the actor said. "He has to really dig deep to see what he's made of. I think this is a testament to how skilled he actually is."
Showrunner Kyle Killen made the decision to draw from more than just the first novel. Quinnell wrote five books featuring the Creasy character, and Killen incorporated elements from the sequel, The Perfect Kill, giving the series a broader foundation than a single-book adaptation would allow.
The season ends with a hook for more. Creasy learns new details about the incident that killed his former Special Forces team and begins pursuing the person responsible. That storyline sets up what a second season could explore, though Netflix has not yet made a renewal announcement.
The series' viewership numbers, combined with its sustained presence on Netflix's weekly chart, suggest the platform has a genuine hit on its hands. Whether that translates into an official second season pickup remains to be seen.
