Mick Jagger is heading back to the movies for the first time in seven years, joining an ensemble cast for Italian director Alice Rohrwacher's adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger's 2005 gothic novel Three Incestuous Sisters. According to Variety, Jagger flew to the island of Stromboli off the coast of Sicily this week, where the film is currently shooting.

The cast also includes Dakota Johnson, Josh O'Connor, Saoirse Ronan, Oscar-winner Jessie Buckley, and Isabella Rossellini. Unconfirmed Italian press reports claim Jagger will play the doomed lighthouse keeper, whose son is played by O'Connor, known for his role in The Crown. Rohrwacher, a two-time Cannes winner, is making her first English-language feature with the project.

The novel, which Niffenegger originally described as a "silent film melodrama told in Japanese prints," began as a limited-edition artist's book created between 1985 and 1998, consisting of 80 aquatint etchings on Japanese Sakamoto paper with letterpress text bound in calf leather. The author's own synopsis describes three sisters living together in a large house by the sea whose lives unravel after a neighbor, the Lighthouse Keeper, is killed by lightning. His son Paris returns to take his father's place, two of the sisters fall in love with him, and a chain of rivalries, revenge, and tragedy follows.

For Jagger, the role marks a return to a side of his career that stretches back more than five decades. He first appeared on screen in the 1970 drama Ned Kelly, then the same year starred in Nicolas Roeg's British crime drama Performance, playing a reclusive rock star. Supporting roles followed across three decades in films including Freejack in 1992, the Nazi drama Bent in 1997, Enigma and The Man From Elysian Fields in 2001, The Bank Clerk in 2008, and most recently The Burnt Orange Heresy in 2019.

The film news arrives as Jagger's main band is also gearing up for a major release. The Rolling Stones announced this month that their new 14-track studio album, Foreign Tongues, will drop on July 10. It will be the follow-up to their Grammy-winning 24th studio album, Hackney Diamonds, released in 2023. The band has already released the lead single "In the Stars" and the opening track "Rough and Twisted," which features an array of guests including The Cure frontman Robert Smith, Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood, and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.

No release date for Three Incestuous Sisters has been announced, and further plot details beyond the Italian press reports have not been confirmed by the production.
