With the bases loaded and the game tied in the bottom of the final inning, Hartselle senior Cain Falciani stepped to the plate and did what he has made a habit of doing in big moments. He came through.
Falciani's RBI single gave the Tigers a 9-8 walk-off win over Spain Park in Game 1 of the Class 6A state championship series Wednesday in Oxford, according to Yahoo Sports. The win extended Hartselle's remarkable streak of come-from-behind victories during the 2026 playoffs.
Coming into Wednesday's game, the Tigers had trailed in five of their previous eight playoff games and won all five. The win over Spain Park made it six comeback wins in six tries. Hartselle fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first inning without Spain Park recording a single hit, but answered immediately. Cruise Baker hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first to cut the deficit to 3-2, and Braden Weathers followed with a three-run home run in the third to put Hartselle ahead 5-3.
The Tigers pushed their lead to 8-4 before Spain Park rallied to tie the game in the sixth inning, setting up Falciani's decisive hit.
It was not the first time Falciani has delivered in a critical spot. Last year in the state finals, he threw out a runner at home plate to seal a win. Three weeks ago he drove in the winning run in extra innings to beat Cullman. Wednesday was simply the latest addition. "We've walked off Game 1 in each of the last few series, and (Falciani) has been responsible for a couple of those," said head coach Brad Phillips. "He's a weapon in the nine-hole for us. He allows us to flip the lineup and I had no doubt he was going to put a barrel on the ball."
Falciani finished with two hits and an RBI. Weathers led the team with two hits and three RBIs, while Baker contributed a hit and two RBIs.
The Tigers are appearing in the state finals for the third consecutive year and are the defending Class 6A champions. This is the first time in that stretch, however, that they enter the second day of the series with a 1-0 lead. Senior Asher Doepel said the team is not getting comfortable. "The first thing coach (Phillips) told us after the game is, 'We've been in their shoes,'" Doepel said. "It feels good (being up 1-0) but we can't be satisfied. We have to go do it again tomorrow."
Falciani put the attitude plainly. "We never give up and we've proven that in just about every game of this playoff run," he said. "It doesn't matter how much we're down, you can never count us out."
Game 2 is scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. at Jacksonville State University. If a third game is necessary, it will follow immediately after.
