Rivian will begin deliveries of its R2 electric SUV on June 9, the company announced, with order invitations and demo drives also starting that day in the United States.
The timing lines up with the Environmental Protection Agency's release of its final range ratings for the vehicle. According to Engadget, records posted to the US Department of Energy's Fuel Economy website show the R2 Performance all-wheel-drive variant with 21-inch wheels has an EPA range of 330 miles and a combined MPGe of 105. MPGe, or Miles Per Gallon Equivalent, is the metric the EPA uses to measure efficiency in electric vehicles.
For comparison, the 2026 Tesla Model Y AWD has an EPA range of 306 miles and a combined MPGe of 105. The two vehicles match on efficiency, but the R2 goes farther on a charge. As Electrek noted, that gap is notable because the Rivian R2 is approximately 800 pounds heavier than the Model Y, and it is both taller and less aerodynamic.
Not every R2 configuration reaches 330 miles. Buyers who choose the version with 20-inch all-terrain wheels will get an EPA range of 307 miles and a combined MPGe of 99. That is still competitive with the Model Y, but the difference shows how much wheel and tire choice affects range.
Rivian is already allowing customers to save their preferred configurations on its website. Existing R1 owners who hold reservations will get accelerated delivery timing. For other reservation holders, the company said it will be "bringing a randomly selected group of reservation holders into early batches." Customers who order after receiving an invitation can expect to wait two to six weeks for delivery.
The R2 is Rivian's push into a more affordable segment of the electric SUV market. The R1S and R1T, Rivian's existing vehicles, are larger and more expensive. The R2 is designed to compete more directly with mainstream electric crossovers, including the Model Y, which has been the best-selling electric vehicle globally.
The June 9 launch date now has a firm EPA rating behind it, giving potential buyers a concrete number to weigh before placing an order. Deliveries begin the same day invitations go out, meaning some customers will have vehicles in hand before the end of the second week of June.
