Danny Boyle wants to finish the trilogy as soon as possible. The Oscar-winning director said in a recent interview that he hopes to begin filming 28 Years Later III next year, though he stopped short of confirming it.
"We ran out of time," he told JoBlo. "Because it's set in an area of Britain [where] you can only film at certain times of the year. We ran out of time this year – we literally ran out of time… So it'll be, hopefully, fingers crossed, next year. But there's the enthusiasm there, and Alex (Garland) has done a wonderful script for it."
According to Deadline, Sony is moving forward with the third film, with Garland returning to write the screenplay. Boyle has previously said he wants to return to direct the concluding chapter.
The 28 Years Later series began when Sony acquired the rights to a trilogy. Rather than greenlighting all three films at once, the studio shot the first two back to back. Boyle directed the first film, which was released last year, while Nia DaCosta directed the follow-up, 28 Years Later: Bone Temple, which premiered earlier in 2026.
The franchise stretches back to 2002, when Boyle and Garland made 28 Days Later. That film was followed by 28 Weeks Later in 2007 before the series went dormant for nearly two decades.
Cillian Murphy, who starred in the original 2002 film as a character named Jim, appeared at the end of Bone Temple. Murphy has since said publicly that he hopes to reprise the role in the third installment.
No production start date or release window for 28 Years Later III has been announced.
