Universal Display Corporation has opened a new technology and innovation center in Chengdu, China, expanding its presence in a country that has become one of the world's largest producers of OLED display panels.
The Chengdu OLED Technology and Innovation Center, which held its grand opening in early June 2026, is intended to serve as a local hub for research collaboration, customer engagement, and technical support, according to a Business Wire announcement from the company. Universal Display is the leading developer of phosphorescent OLED materials and technology, and its intellectual property sits at the core of many of the OLED screens used in smartphones, televisions, and wearable devices worldwide.
China's display manufacturing industry has grown rapidly over the past decade, with companies such as BOE Technology and Visionox investing heavily in OLED production capacity. Having a local facility allows Universal Display to work more closely with those manufacturers, shortening the distance between its research teams and the engineers who apply its materials and processes in production environments.
OLED technology produces light directly from organic compounds when electricity is applied, allowing displays to be thinner, more flexible, and more power-efficient than traditional LCD panels. Each pixel generates its own light, which means the display can achieve true black by simply turning off individual pixels, resulting in higher contrast than backlit screens.
Universal Display's phosphorescent approach is more energy-efficient than earlier fluorescent OLED methods, converting a greater proportion of electrical energy into visible light. The company licenses its materials and patents to display manufacturers rather than making finished screens itself, which means its technology reaches consumers through the products of its partners.
The Chengdu center is the latest in a series of moves by Western technology firms to maintain direct relationships with Chinese manufacturing partners even as geopolitical tensions have complicated broader trade relationships. Universal Display did not detail the size of the facility or the number of staff it would employ, but framed the opening as a long-term commitment to supporting innovation in the region.
The company is headquartered in Ewing, New Jersey, and has been a key supplier to major display makers for more than two decades.
