Steven Spielberg walked into a pub quiz about his own films Friday night and surprised everyone in the room.
The American director appeared at The Devonshire in Soho, a central London pub, during a trivia night built around his filmography. The event was hosted by BBC Radio 1 film critic Ali Plumb.
Spielberg was not alone. He brought actor Colman Domingo, who plays a lead role in his new film, Disclosure Day. The two were surrounded by ordinary pub-goers who had shown up for a quiz and ended up meeting the director the quiz was about.
According to the BBC, The Devonshire co-owner Oisín Rogers said Spielberg told him he had a "lovely time" and "really enjoyed" his Guinness.
Plumb posted photos of the visit on Instagram afterward. "I also cannot believe this happened," he wrote. Former BBC Radio 2 host Zoe Ball responded to the post with a reference to one of Spielberg's most famous films. "You're going to need a bigger pub," Ball wrote, reworking the line from Jaws.
Spielberg has been in London to promote Disclosure Day, which had its UK premiere on June 4. The film is set for wide release on June 12.
In addition to Domingo, the film stars Emily Blunt, Josh O'Connor, Colin Firth and Eve Hewson. Blunt plays Margaret Fairchild, a meteorologist. O'Connor plays Daniel Kellner, a cybersecurity expert who uncovers evidence of a long-running cover-up and is pursued by governments and powerful corporations trying to suppress the truth.
The film marks Spielberg's return to alien-themed storytelling. He previously directed E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which earned him Oscar nominations in 1983 and 1978.
