A magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao island in the southern Philippines, killing at least 32 people and sending schoolchildren running as an outdoor structure collapsed at one school.
According to BBC News, pupils at a school in Digos could be heard screaming as the ground shook and a roof structure fell. The school confirmed in a statement posted to Facebook that no one was injured there, thanking staff and pupils for "staying calm and orderly throughout the situation."
At least 32 deaths have been reported across the Philippines, though casualty numbers still need to be verified by the national disaster agency, which tabulates and verifies reports from various local sources.
More than 130 aftershocks followed the initial quake, with magnitudes ranging from 1.3 to 6.7.
