Camille Cottin, known for the series Call My Agent!, has joined the cast of Villaflor, a Netflix political thriller from Oscar-nominated director Santiago Mitre, according to Deadline. Production wrapped on the film Friday after a three-month shoot.
The title refers to Azucena Villaflor, the real-life activist who helped found the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo. In the film, Verónica Llinás plays Villaflor, a woman who transforms her search for her disappeared son into an act of resistance against Argentina's military dictatorship. Argentina was under military rule from 1976 to 1983, a period during which tens of thousands of people disappeared.
Cottin portrays Alice Domon, one of the French nuns involved with the Santa Cruz Group, a gathering of relatives of the missing who began organizing at the Santa Cruz Church in Buenos Aires.
Peter Lanzani plays Rubio, an army officer assigned to infiltrate the church group. Soledad Villamil and Valeria Lois also join the cast, alongside a large ensemble that includes Susana Pampin, Alicia Guerra, Vivian El Jaber, Azul Lombardía, Mariela Acosta, Paula Ransenberg, Juliana Muras, and Muriel Santa Ana. The cast also includes Antonia Bengoechea, José Mehrez, and Enrique Piñeyro.
Mitre wrote the film with Mariano Llinás. Mitre previously received an Academy Award nomination for Argentina, 1985. Villaflor is produced by Buenos Aires-based La Unión de los Ríos and Paris-based Maneki Films.
Deadline reported exclusively in January that Mitre was developing an Argentina-set thriller for Netflix. The title and full casting details were not available at that time. The film will be released on Netflix next year.
