Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay was not on the team bus when it pulled into the squad's hotel in Boston on Thursday. He had missed training that day with an upset stomach and made the trip from Charlotte separately, accompanied by a doctor.
According to BBC Sport, the 29-year-old Napoli player's separate travel is believed to be a precautionary measure. Scotland face Haiti on Saturday evening at Boston Stadium in Foxborough, which will be Scotland's first World Cup match in 28 years.
McTominay has been central to Scotland's recent campaigns. He has scored 15 goals across 70 international caps and found the net in Scotland's 4-0 win over Bolivia just last Saturday.
Fellow midfielder Kenny McLean spoke to reporters at Thursday's media conference before the extent of McTominay's situation was fully clear. McLean kept his comments brief but did not hide how important his teammate is to the group.
"Hopefully that doesn't spread. Fingers crossed Scott will be fine. I'm sure he will be," McLean said. "I don't need to speak too much on him, everyone knows how big he is. It's a team effort and always will be, but when you have special, special players like that you want them to be available. I'm sure he will be."
Scotland fans have been traveling to Boston in large numbers ahead of the tournament opener. Scotland's group also includes Morocco and Brazil. Manager Steve Clarke is scheduled to address the media on Friday, where an update on McTominay's condition is expected.
