The Pitt is changing the way it introduces its characters in season 3. The HBO Max medical drama, which built its reputation around a strict real-time format where each episode covers one hour in the emergency department, will now bring characters in at different points in the day rather than all at once.
Sepideh Moafi, who joined the show in season 2 as Dr. Al-Hashimi, confirmed the shift. According to Screen Rant, Moafi said there will be "staggered entrances" for the characters, and she added that she will not appear in the season premiere.
The original format was a defining feature of the show. Every episode of the first two seasons tracked a single hour of a day shift at PTMC's emergency department, with the full cast on screen from the opening minutes. The season 2 finale set a viewership record, making the format change an unusual decision for a show that has been so successful.
The large ensemble cast may be what makes the adjustment workable. Noah Wyle is the undeniable lead as Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, but the show has always relied on viewers caring about the full group of characters in the department. Spreading out their arrivals gives the writers more room to work with individual storylines.
Some of those storylines were set up directly by the season 2 finale. Dr. Al-Hashimi's future as an attending was left uncertain after she experienced seizures during her shift. She accepted that she should not be working in the ED until medically cleared. According to Robby, she could be fully cleared within six months. Since the time jump between seasons will be shorter than that window, her later entrance in the day could reflect her new status within the hospital.
Another character, Mel, received news at the end of season 2 that she might have to go through another deposition. The new format could allow her deposition to take place at the start of a shift, which would be more plausible than the mid-shift deposition that occurred in season 2.
The Pitt debuted in 2025 and quickly became one of the most talked-about new dramas on HBO Max. Season 3 has not yet received a release date.
