The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and Paralympics will open its volunteer application portal on July 14, exactly two years before the Olympic opening ceremony. About 60,000 individuals are needed to fill roles across both games.
According to a report by the Associated Press via Yahoo Sports, the Olympic volunteer period runs from March to August 2028, while Paralympic volunteers are needed from August to September 2028. Every volunteer will be required to commit to a minimum of 10 shifts within one period, LA28 organizers said Monday.
Volunteer roles will cover a wide range of responsibilities. Some positions involve welcoming and guiding spectators and athletes. Others are more specialized, including providing medical assistance or language translation services.
Most positions will be based in the Los Angeles area, but volunteers will also be needed in San Diego, Oklahoma City, New York, St. Louis, Columbus, Nashville, and San Jose. Applicants will be asked to indicate their preferred location and any special skills that might qualify them for a specialized role.
LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover spoke to the importance of volunteers in making the games possible. "Volunteers are the backbone of the games," Hoover said. "They are a friendly face who helps welcome the world, create memorable experiences and bring the Olympic and Paralympic spirit to life. Their passion and energy will help define LA28 for athletes, fans and communities across the region."
Beyond the games themselves, applicants can also begin serving the community now. LA28 organizers said more than 25 events have already been held around Los Angeles, including beach, street, and trail cleanups as well as fresh food packing for those in need.
The July 14 portal opening gives prospective volunteers roughly two years to prepare before the first Olympic events begin in early 2028.
