Sony Santa Monica Studio is developing a remake of the original God of War trilogy for PS5, and TC Carson, who voiced Kratos in the Ancient Greece-set games, is set to return to the role.
According to Screen Rant, Carson originated the character but was replaced by Christopher Judge when the series rebooted in 2018. Judge has helmed the role since, through the 2018 game and its 2022 follow-up, God of War Ragnarok.
The remake announcement prompted a clear reaction from fans. Many expressed support for Carson's return while also making it plain they want Judge to continue in any future entries set after the reboot.
On Reddit, one user wrote: "I hope this doesn't mean there won't be any more games with Judge. I have become VERY attached to his version of Kratos."
Other fans were more measured in how they distinguished the two performances. "Not really an upgrade, just more fitting for a different type of Kratos. TC plays a younger and angrier Kratos impeccably. Judge plays a more refined Kratos that, with all due respect to TC, I don't think he could have done," one commenter said.
Sony Santa Monica has not made any official statements about the long-term future of the franchise beyond the upcoming spin-off centered on Kratos's late ex-wife Laufey, which Sony has described as coming soon without a specific release date, and the trilogy remake.
There is one complicating factor around Judge's future involvement. He has undergone several surgeries in recent years, and the physical demands of motion capture work may limit how the studio can use him going forward. Any future involvement may be restricted to voice work.
The God of War series was created by David Jaffe and has expanded across more than a dozen titles since 2005.
