Shadowbox Studios has taken over management of Kaufman Astoria Studios in Astoria, Queens, stepping in after a legal dispute left the historic New York facility without stable ownership.
The move was reported exclusively by Deadline. The 500,000 square-foot campus includes 11 soundstages and 325,000 square feet of office and production support space. It was originally built in the 1920s as the home of Paramount Pictures and has been in use for film and television production for over a century.
Productions filmed at Kaufman Astoria include Goodfellas, Sesame Street, Succession, And Just Like That, and The Devil Wears Prada 2.
The management change follows a foreclosure complaint filed in April by Deutsche Bank against Kaufman Astoria Studios and its former owner, Hackman Capital Partners. The bank alleged a default on a $340 million loan that had been due the previous fall. A court-appointed receiver subsequently selected Shadowbox to operate the studios, effective August 3, 2026.
"We want to welcome producers to this incredible studio to be enriched by its history and the storytellers that have come before them at the same time as offering a top-tier customer service to meet the demands of today's production needs," said Mike Mosallam, Chief Operating Officer of Shadowbox Studios.
Mosallam added: "Our team is looking forward to working with the on-lot staff to thoughtfully integrate the Shadowbox Studios standards of excellence. Whatever the production, we will work in partnership to make it seamless."
Shadowbox already operates production facilities in several locations. Shadowbox Atlanta is a nine-soundstage complex that has housed productions including Jumanji and Godzilla: King of Monsters. In the United Kingdom, Shadowbox Shinfield is an 18-soundstage facility that has hosted Star Wars: The Acolyte and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. The company is also developing a 10-soundstage complex in Queensland, Australia.
