Marvel's biggest film of 2026 is now fewer than 200 days away, and the release calendar is setting up what could be one of the most competitive single weekends at the movies in years.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for December 18, according to Collider. The film was originally set for a May release but was pushed back, along with its planned companion film Secret Wars, to give post-production more time to finish the project.
The delay puts Doomsday on the same opening day as Dune: Part Three. Both films are projected to be among the biggest box office draws of the year. The last time two films of that scale opened simultaneously was the Barbenheimer weekend in 2023, and some observers believe December 18 could exceed even that.
Robert Downey Jr. headlines Doomsday, returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe not as Iron Man but as the villain Doctor Doom. Long-running cast members Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth are also confirmed to have key roles in the film.
Marvel has not been absent from screens while Doomsday was being finished. The studio released Wonder Man and Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 earlier in 2026. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland alongside Mark Ruffalo and Jon Bernthal, is also on the way, along with the Disney+ series Vision Quest, which will see Paul Bettany return as Vision for the first time since WandaVision.
Very little has been confirmed about the actual plot of Avengers: Doomsday. The film's marketing has leaned on Downey's return and the assembled cast rather than any story specifics. That strategy has been enough to sustain significant fan interest in the months since the delay was announced.
