The Whitlams are returning to the pub circuit this spring. The Australian band announced the Return to Rock Island tour this week, a nine-show East Coast run scheduled for October that frontman Tim Freedman described as a deliberate change of pace.
According to Billboard, the tour opens October 2 at Hotel Brunswick in Brunswick Heads and runs through late October, hitting Coffs Harbour, Melbourne, Sydney, Wombarra, and Brisbane. Melbourne's Corner Hotel, Sydney's Metro Theatre, and Brisbane's The Triffid each host two-night stands. A stop at Wombarra Bowlo is set for October 18.
William Crighton and his band will open all shows. Presale tickets go on sale Tuesday, June 23 at 10 a.m. local time through thewhitlams.com.
The announcement comes just days after the Orchestral '26 tour wrapped on June 13. That run included sold-out performances at Sydney's State Theatre, Brisbane's QPAC, Newcastle's Civic Theatre, Adelaide's Festival Theatre, and Melbourne's Hamer Hall. The new tour is a conscious move in a different direction.
"We're hitting our favourite pubs in October for something wildly different to Orchestral '26," the band said. "Come and enjoy our raucous side, with William Crighton and his band opening all dates. Return to the Metro, the Triffid, the Corner…woohoo."
The Whitlams formed in Sydney's Newtown in late 1992, founded by Freedman alongside Stevie Plunder and Andy Lewis. The band built its name on inner-city piano rock before breaking nationally with Eternal Nightcap in 1997. That album was certified triple platinum in Australia, peaked at number 14 on the ARIA Albums Chart, and produced No Aphrodisiac, which won ARIA Song of the Year in 1998 and topped the triple j Hottest 100 for that year.
The 1999 follow-up Love This City reached number 3 on the ARIA chart. Torch the Moon debuted at number 1 in 2002, the band's highest chart position. At the 1998 ARIA Awards, the band also took home Group of the Year and Best Independent Release for Eternal Nightcap.
The full tour runs from October 2 through October 24.
