James Norton will take on one of the most demanding roles in theater when he plays Hamlet in a new West End production set for fall 2027. The show will be directed by Thomas Ostermeier, the artistic director of the Schaubühne Berlin, in what will be his first time directing Shakespeare in English.
Producers Wessex Grove and Gavin Kalin Productions are bringing the production to London. A specific theater and dates have not yet been confirmed, according to Variety.
Ostermeier's previous production of Hamlet has been on international tour for 18 years. This new staging will be entirely separate from that production and will work from the original English text.
Norton addressed the casting publicly. "It's a privilege for anyone to take on the role of Hamlet. It's also pretty terrifying. But with Thomas Ostermeier at the helm, I know I could not be in better hands. Both this role and this director have intrigued me and challenged me over the years, and so I cannot wait to start this journey with Thomas and see where it takes us," Norton said.
Ostermeier also commented on the pairing. "I am pleased to be revisiting 'Hamlet' for the West End with the great stage actor, James Norton. It will be my first time directing Shakespeare in English, and I am excited to explore the original text in order to bring this new production to life. My first 'Hamlet' has been touring the world for 18 years so I am honored to have the opportunity to bring it here to London with James, who in my mind is a perfect Prince of Denmark," he said.
Norton most recently appeared on stage in Ivo Van Hove's adaptation of A Little Life in the West End. On screen, he currently plays Ormund Hightower in the third season of HBO's House of the Dragon. He will also appear as Brian Epstein, the Beatles' manager, in Sam Mendes' four-film Beatles project alongside Paul Mescal, Harris Dickinson, Barry Keoghan, and Joseph Quinn. He also has two additional films in the pipeline: Guy Ritchie's Wife & Dog and George Jacques' Sunny Dancer.
Ostermeier's recent London work includes The Seagull at the Barbican, starring Cate Blanchett and Tom Burke, and An Enemy of the People with Matt Smith in the West End. He received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale in 2011. Wessex Grove, one of the producing companies on this Hamlet, won The Stage Award for Best Producer in 2026.
