Bentley has confirmed the name of its first electric car and set a reveal date. The vehicle is called the Torcal, and it will be officially shown to the public in London on September 23.
According to a report by Engadget, Bentley displayed a teaser image of the car alongside the announcement. The company has been working toward an electric vehicle since 2021, when it first announced plans for an electric SUV.
"Our new Torcal sets extraordinary benchmarks in every area that matters, and may just be the most considered car in our history," said Bentley CEO Frank-Steffern Walliser in a statement.
The name follows a pattern the company uses across its lineup. Like the Bentayga, Bacalar, and Batur, the Torcal takes its name from a natural landmark. In this case, that is the El Torcal de Antequera rock formation in Spain. Bentley said the name also borrows from the Latin word for torque, a nod to electric motor performance.
Spy photos have already provided some details about the car. It was spotted undergoing cold weather testing in the Arctic Circle earlier this year, where photos showed a fastback-like body style partially inspired by Bentley's EXP 15 design concept from the previous year. The vehicle was also photographed at Germany's Nurburgring race track, wrapped in a heavy disguise pattern. Images from that location caught glimpses of the interior, which appeared to include red leather, black Alcantara, a large curved display, and mechanical tactile controls.
Bentley is a British luxury automaker now owned by Volkswagen. The company said more information about the Torcal would be released in the weeks leading up to the September reveal date.
"New in concept, yet Bentley to its core, the Torcal carries forward the craftsmanship and performance that have defined the brand since 1919," Bentley wrote in its announcement.
