England battled through most of the second half with ten men in Mexico City and still came away with a 3-2 win over co-host Mexico, booking their place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

According to BBC Sport, the result keeps England on track for what would be their third major tournament final of the decade. They will face Norway in Miami on Saturday, July 11, with kickoff set for 22:00 BST.

Norway reached this stage by beating Brazil 2-1 in the round of 16. It is the best World Cup run in their history. Their path there has been built largely around one player. Erling Haaland, the 25-year-old Manchester City striker, is tied with France's Kylian Mbappe and Argentina's Lionel Messi at seven goals in the Golden Boot standings. He reached that total while being rested entirely in Norway's final group game, after qualification had already been secured. He now has 62 goals in 54 international appearances.

If England get past Norway, they could face Argentina in the semi-finals in Atlanta on Wednesday, July 15. Argentina won all three of their group games, with Messi, who turned 39 this month, scoring eight goals so far in the tournament. They survived a late scare against Cape Verde in the round of 32, needing extra time, before beating Egypt to reach the quarter-finals. They next face Switzerland, who reached the last eight for the first time since 1954 by beating Colombia on penalties.

In the other potential semi-final path, Spain face Portugal in the round of 16. The winner of that match will play either the United States or Belgium in the quarter-finals.

France and Morocco are set to meet in their quarter-final. Both countries are in the same side of the draw as England and could be final opponents. France won the World Cup in 2018 and finished runners-up in 2022. Spain won it in 2010. Morocco reached the semi-finals in 2022.

The final is scheduled for Sunday, July 19 in New Jersey, in front of 82,500 fans.
