A new eight-part crime drama series arrives on MGM+ this Sunday, July 12, and it draws from one of New York City's lesser-known but historically significant criminal organizations. The Westies, created by Chris Brancato of Narcos and Michael Panes of Godfather of Harlem, brings together a cast led by Oscar winner J.K. Simmons and Titus Welliver for what Screen Rant described as a gripping gangster story rooted in real events.
The show is set in the Hell's Kitchen district of New York City during the 1980s, a period when an Irish-American gang of the same name was navigating a complicated and often violent relationship with the Five Families of the Italian Mafia. The Westies were vastly outnumbered, but their fierce loyalty and willingness to use violence allowed them to carve out a meaningful share of power. Central to the plot is a fragile truce built around the Jatvis Center construction project, a deal that begins to crack when a younger generation of gangsters starts making moves that threaten its stability.
At the same time, the FBI is closing in, with an agent leading a task force aimed at dismantling the Gambino crime family operating in parallel to the gang's internal conflicts.
J.K. Simmons plays Eamon Sweeney, the no-nonsense head of The Westies who carries what Screen Rant described as a particular charm. Tom Brittney plays James "Jimmy" Roarke, Sweeney's rising protégé and the face of the gang's younger generation. Titus Welliver takes on the role of Glenn Keenan, an NYPD officer with deep personal ties to the gang, having grown up alongside Sweeney. Jessica Frances Dukes, known for her work on Ozark, plays FBI agent Birdie Polk, who leads the task force working to bring the Gambinos down.
One notable aspect of the casting is that Simmons and Welliver have never appeared onscreen together before, despite both having had recurring roles in the Law & Order franchise at various points in their careers.
The first two episodes drop this weekend, with weekly releases to follow through August, when the finale is expected to arrive.
