Conor McGregor's highly anticipated return to the Octagon lasted just over a minute. At UFC 329 on Saturday night, McGregor rushed Max Holloway seconds into the fight, threw a leaping kick, and came up limp after an awkward landing. Referee Mike Beltran stopped the bout shortly after as McGregor struggled to stay on his feet.

The fight took place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. According to Yahoo Sports, McGregor's knee buckled from the awkward landing, and the stoppage brought an abrupt end to what had been one of the most anticipated comebacks in recent UFC history.

The ending sparked immediate controversy online. A video circulating after the event appeared to show McGregor losing his footing while removing his shoes before entering the Octagon. Many online pointed to that footage as evidence that McGregor had entered the fight already injured. The UFC responded by releasing their own video of McGregor's pre-fight warm-up, which showed him throwing kicks similar to the one that led to the injury, with no visible signs of a compromised knee.

McGregor addressed the speculation directly in a statement posted to X shortly after the fight.

"My head gasket is gone," McGregor wrote. "Destroyed. I had no injury/injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell."

He continued: "I was so sharp and so ready for this fight I cannot believe what has happened. The talk of me being off while walking in to the fight is nonsense. I was calm, ready, and confident. I am in shock what has taken place. The devil is literally staring at me right in front of my face here. I am not engaging. I will be at church tomorrow."

McGregor has dealt with serious leg injuries before. He suffered a broken tibia during his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier in 2021, which kept him out of competition for an extended period. Saturday's injury adds another significant setback to a career that has been increasingly defined by long absences from the sport.

An official diagnosis had not been confirmed as of Saturday night. Until one is released, the full extent of the damage to his knee remains unknown.

Holloway, who was uninjured in the brief fight, now faces his own set of decisions. He could wait for a potential trilogy bout with McGregor in 2027, or pursue another run at UFC gold in the meantime.
