Zack Wheeler finally received an invitation to join the National League All-Star roster. By then, the Philadelphia Phillies ace was no longer interested.
Wheeler revealed Saturday that he declined a late offer from Major League Baseball after being omitted from the original roster and then passed over during the first round of replacement selections.
“They disrespected me, so I’m just not going to participate in that thing,” Wheeler said. He also described himself as unwilling to be treated as “the fifth option.”
The original All-Star rosters were announced July 4. Wheeler was not included despite producing one of the strongest first halves among National League pitchers. MLB then announced three replacement pitchers on Tuesday: St. Louis Cardinals reliever Riley O’Brien, Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo and Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Braxton Ashcraft.
They replaced Paul Skenes of the Pirates, Jacob Misiorowski of the Milwaukee Brewers and Max Meyer of the Miami Marlins, all of whom were scheduled to pitch for their teams during the final weekend before the All-Star break.
Wheeler was also scheduled to pitch Sunday, which apparently worked against him during the replacement process. Starting pitchers who work immediately before the All-Star Game are generally unavailable to pitch in the exhibition, but Wheeler argued that the scheduling conflict should not have prevented him from receiving the official recognition.
“Because I pitch on a certain day, I can’t pitch in the All-Star Game or even be there or get the recognition,” Wheeler said after learning that the three replacement pitchers had been chosen.
Wheeler said he would have been willing to throw one inning Tuesday on two days’ rest. He noted that the timing would have been similar to when he normally throws a bullpen session between starts.
MLB contacted Wheeler on Friday about another opening on the National League roster. He declined, explaining that he considered the invitation too late after the league had already overlooked him several times. His “fifth option” comment appeared to reflect the full sequence—the original omission, Tuesday’s replacements and the eventual Friday call—rather than a confirmed numerical ranking supplied by MLB.
The rejection came during an outstanding stretch for the 36-year-old right-hander.
On Tuesday, only hours after the initial replacement pitchers were announced, Wheeler tied his career high with 14 strikeouts in a 4-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. He allowed one run on four hits over seven innings without issuing a walk.
Wheeler called that performance “a reminder for whoever needs to be reminded.” He became only the sixth pitcher in Phillies history to record at least 14 strikeouts without a walk in one game, joining a group that includes Jim Bunning, Curt Schilling and Cliff Lee.
Wheeler then strengthened his case Sunday against the Detroit Tigers. He pitched six scoreless innings, struck out 10 and allowed his earned-run average to fall from 2.28 to 2.14. He entered the All-Star break with a 9-1 record, 108 strikeouts and a 0.91 WHIP across 93 innings.
Those numbers are especially notable because Wheeler missed the first month of the season while recovering from thoracic outlet decompression surgery. The procedure followed the discovery of a blood clot in his right arm during the 2025 season. He returned to the Phillies rotation in late April and quickly reestablished himself as one of the National League’s leading starters.
Wheeler said being selected this season would have carried additional personal significance because of the work required to return from surgery. At the same time, he rejected the idea that he should have been chosen merely because his comeback made for a compelling story. He believed his performance alone had earned the honor.
The veteran has been selected to three previous All-Star teams, including in 2024 and 2025. He also started the 2025 game for the National League. Wheeler said All-Star selections remain meaningful because they become a permanent part of a player’s career record and may affect how that career is viewed after retirement.
Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber publicly supported Wheeler, saying deserving players should receive acknowledgment while they are still competing. Interim manager Don Mattingly also said Wheeler tends to be overlooked nationally despite his sustained success.
Philadelphia will still be heavily represented in the game. Schwarber, Bryce Harper, Brandon Marsh, Cristopher Sánchez, Jhoan Duran and Luzardo were named to the National League roster. Sánchez was later selected to start the game for the NL.
The controversy is magnified by the location of the event. The 2026 MLB All-Star Game will be played Tuesday, July 14, at Citizens Bank Park, Wheeler’s home stadium in Philadelphia. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern on Fox.
Wheeler emphasized that he was not rejecting the importance of the All-Star Game itself, which he called a privilege. His objection was directed at MLB’s selection process and the timing of the invitation.
For Wheeler, accepting the late opening would have meant participating only after he believed the league had exhausted several other options. He chose instead to enter the break with one of baseball’s best pitching records—and without another All-Star designation beside his name.
