Josh Kerr will attempt to break the world mile record at the Diamond League meeting in London on Saturday, BBC Sport confirmed. The Scottish runner has been named in the field for the Emsley Carr Mile at London Stadium, one of the most storied races on the European athletics calendar.

Kerr, 28, is an Olympic silver medallist and two-time world indoor champion. He will be joined in the mile by fellow Scot Neil Gourley, who holds the European indoor mile record and won silver at the 2025 world indoor championships. Paris Olympic bronze medallist Yared Nuguse of the United States will also line up, along with Americans Hobbs Kessler and Nathan Green.

The London meeting follows a Diamond League event in Monaco on Friday, where the athletics world saw another record fall. Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi, the Olympic and world 800m champion, broke the long-standing men's 1,000m world record on his debut at the rarely contested distance. Wanyonyi will now travel to London for the 800m.

That 800m field at London Stadium is itself one of the strongest assembled in recent years. Jake Wightman, last year's world 1500m silver medallist, will compete alongside Wanyonyi, Canadian Olympic silver medallist Marco Arop, American Olympic finalist Bryce Hoppel, Ireland's Mark English, and English runners Max Burgin and Ben Pattison.

The women's 800m features Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson leading a deep English contingent that includes world silver medallist Georgia Hunter Bell. The Netherlands' Femke Broeders-Bol, a multiple Olympic and world medallist in the 400m hurdles, has stepped up in distance to join the race.

On the sprints side, Julien Alfred arrives in London after running the third-fastest women's 200m time in history at Monaco, a world lead and personal best for the Saint Lucian double Olympic medallist. She will defend her London title against Gabby Thomas of the United States and English runners Dina Asher-Smith, Amy Hunt, and new British champion Success Eduan.

Kerr's world record attempt gives Saturday's meeting a clear focal point, but the depth across every event means London Stadium is set to host one of the most competitive single-day track meetings of the year.
