A crime thriller starring Gerard Butler that fell flat at the box office in 2021 is getting a second look on streaming. Copshop, directed by Joe Carnahan, is coming to Peacock in August 2026, according to Collider.
The film earned roughly $7 million during its limited theatrical run against a reported budget of $43 million. Despite mostly positive reviews, it never found a wide audience, largely due to its release circumstances.
The premise is unusual. Butler plays a hitman who deliberately gets himself arrested and sent to the same jail as the con artist he has been hired to track. Once inside, the two men are locked in their cells and forced into a tense standoff. Critics who covered the film compared it to a feature-length version of one of Quentin Tarantino's trademark face-off sequences.
That comparison has become more relevant recently. Carnahan, who directed Copshop, also directed The Rip, a Netflix crime film starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon that was released in January. The Rip accumulated more than 135 million views and received mostly positive reviews.
Tarantino himself praised The Rip in a piece for Sight and Sound magazine, calling it "an exciting cop thriller with a novel premise that manages to deliver the goods in really clever ways." He credited it with reminding him of the cop movies he grew up watching in the 1970s and 1980s.
Tarantino's enthusiasm for The Rip has drawn renewed attention to Carnahan's earlier work. Copshop's arrival on Peacock gives viewers a chance to catch up with a film that many missed during its original run.
No additional Peacock debut date beyond August 2026 has been confirmed.
