A Michael Bay film that underperformed in theaters four years ago is now drawing significant attention on Netflix, according to Collider.
Ambulance, the 2022 heist thriller Bay directed, has climbed into the streaming top 10 on Netflix and also jumped into the video-on-demand top 10 on both Prime Video and Apple TV. The film follows two robbers who are forced to steal an ambulance after their robbery goes wrong. Bay directed stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in what Collider described as the most high-octane performances of their careers.
The film struggled during its theatrical run. It grossed $52 million globally against a $40 million budget, a margin that left little room for profit after marketing and distribution costs. Critics gave it a 68% on Rotten Tomatoes, while audience scores were stronger, reaching 87% on the site's Popcornmeter.
The renewed interest in Ambulance comes during a broader moment of attention on Bay's work. The Last Ship, a dystopian sci-fi thriller Bay produced, had all of its episodes added to Netflix in June and has also seen a significant resurgence in viewership this year. The show starred the late Eric Dane, who died earlier in 2026 after a battle with ALS. Though Bay did not direct any episodes, Collider noted his creative influence is visible throughout the show's action sequences.
Ambulance's path from a quiet theatrical exit to a streaming hit follows a pattern that has become common for action-heavy films. The genre tends to perform well in home viewing environments, and the combination of Bay's direction and two recognizable leads appears to have given the film a second life on multiple platforms at once.
