BBC Studios is looking for a new leader for its Natural History Unit, the division responsible for some of the most recognized wildlife documentaries in the world. The search begins immediately, according to Deadline, following an internal reorganization that moves current unit head Jonny Keeling into a newly defined Creative Director role.
Keeling has led the Natural History Unit since 2021. During his tenure, the unit produced "Frozen Planet II," "Planet Earth III," "Asia," "Mammals," "Kingdom," "Dynasties II," and "The Americas with Tom Hanks," among others. Those projects aired across the BBC, international streamers, and U.S. networks.
Keeling will remain with BBC Studios throughout the transition, which is not expected to be completed until 2027. In his new position, he will work alongside Mike Gunton, the veteran NHU Creative Director, and stay on the unit's senior leadership team. That team also includes Sreya Biswas, Director of Programmes; Juli Porter, Director of Commercial and Operations; and Maria Norman, Head of Production.
Kate Ward, BBC Studios' MD Unscripted, Global Content, said the reorganization returns one of the genre's top creative figures to direct program-making. "I would like to thank Jonny for his impact and enormous contribution as Head of The Natural History Unit over the past five years," Ward said. "I'm delighted that in stepping into this new role we will have one of the leading creative talents in the genre return to full time programme making, and in doing so continue to cement the NHU's reputation and impact for clients and audiences globally."
Keeling described the new role as an opportunity to focus on the next generation. He said he is "excited to take up this new opportunity to focus on mentoring the next generation of filmmakers, ensuring we continue to win new commissions and delivering the most ambitious and compelling wildlife stories to inspire and delight millions around the planet."
Upcoming projects from the Natural History Unit include "Blue Planet III," "Hidden Planet," "Green Planet II," and "Lion." Recruitment for Keeling's replacement as unit head begins immediately.
