A 70-year-old woman from Nebraska with no stage experience moves to New York City to become a Broadway star. That is the premise of a new comedy pilot CBS has ordered for potential inclusion in its 2027-28 season.
The project, titled Hilda! (In Lights!), comes from writer Abbey Caldwell, whose credits include Peacock's "Laid" and ABC's "Fresh Off the Boat." According to Variety, three scripts for the single-camera project were announced as being in development at CBS Studios back in April, making this pilot order the next step in that process.
The official logline describes it as "one of those classic shows about a plucky small-town optimist who moves to the big city to pursue her life-long dream of starring on Broadway. There's just one teeny, tiny, totally inconsequential difference — our hero Hilda is a 70-year-old woman from Nebraska with absolutely no experience."
Caldwell serves as writer and executive producer. She is joined by Will Graham, Max Linsky, and Tonia Davis for Invitation Media as non-writing executive producers. CBS Studios is producing.
The pilot order makes CBS the first broadcast network to order a project for 2027-28 consideration, according to Deadline. It was one of several projects the network put into development alongside a forensic drama called I Know Who You Are and Flint, a cop show starring Matt LeBlanc as a burnt-out LAPD detective who, on the verge of retirement, is blindsided when the city extends his service by five years.
The Hollywood Reporter noted that if Hilda! (In Lights!) makes it to series, it would join a growing number of TV and streaming shows built around older lead characters, including CBS's own hit Matlock starring Kathy Bates, NBC's upcoming Newlyweds, and Netflix's A Man on the Inside. Lead characters aged 60 or older were once considered a rarity in scripted television.
The order also continues a visible shift in CBS's comedy strategy. The network is moving further away from multi-camera comedy, a format it relied on for decades. Deadline reported that CBS now has more single-camera than multi-camera sitcoms on its upcoming 2026-27 schedule, with Ghosts and Eternally Yours on one side against Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage on the other. If Hilda! (In Lights!) reaches series, it would give CBS two dramas and a comedy each led by a woman in her 70s.
Caldwell's pilot is not the only new CBS project drawing attention. Variety noted that the network is also adding NCIS: New York to its fall 2026-27 lineup, with LL Cool J reprising his role as Sam Hanna, debuting Oct. 6. A dramedy called Einstein, starring Matthew Gray Gubler as the great-grandson of Albert Einstein, is set to premiere in the second half of that same season.
No casting for Hilda! (In Lights!) has been announced.
