The Buffalo Bills spent $2.2 billion on a new stadium. Some fans inside it cannot see the game.
During the team's Red and Blue practice last Saturday, the first public event at the new Highmark Stadium, posts flooded social media showing obstructed views from multiple sections. The videos and photos racked up millions of views and engagements, according to a report by Fox News's Outkick.
The problems showed up in several different parts of the building. Some seats have a pane of glass that blurs the view, including at the 50-yard line. Upper deck seats in certain sections block most of the red zone on the far side of the field, specifically the end zone. In the lower level, expensive seats about 30 to 40 rows up near the 12 to 13-yard line have their view of the opposite side of the field blocked by a standing platform. At least one post showed a higher-level seat where the view of the field passes almost entirely through glass with staircase railings in the way.
Some fans said they felt misled. They had been told by Bills personnel that railings would not block their views.
The old Highmark Stadium had its own problems. It was widely considered cold, dreary, and outdated by the end of its life. The new facility was built just across from the old one and was pitched as a modern showpiece for the Buffalo region, a key part of securing what the team described as a record-setting taxpayer contribution from New York state.
The new stadium does include significant upgrades. Rather than adding a full roof, the design keeps the outdoor character that Bills fans associate with the NFL experience in Buffalo. Roughly 65% of seats are covered by an awning. Infrared heaters are installed under seating areas for cold weather. The natural grass field is heated, and the canopy incorporates a snow-melt system.
The designers clearly worked through the challenges of building a modern outdoor NFL stadium in western New York. But the obstructed view complaints suggest some of those design decisions created tradeoffs that buyers of premium seats did not anticipate. Fans who purchased personal seat licenses and expensive lower-level seats are among those reporting blocked sightlines.
The Bills have not yet played a regular season game in the new facility. It remains unclear how the team plans to respond to the complaints before the season opens.
